So this really was about RGM then?
Not into that sorry. I asked a question and you posted a good track. Not great at all but a good track.

Sound is nothing without a song, Great songs are just great songs. Perhaps I won't again?

Have a bloody great Christmas.

I've looked at your profile and seen that you have a very good history in recording & Studio work RGM. I was hoping that you would offer up something a little different than your own song as an example that was all.

I haven't got your depth of knowledge in recording. Sure I'm learning but its a tough curve when presented with so many good examples, yours included without help from members such as yourself too.

No worries, I'll get there one way or another.
Thanks.
Merry Xmas. :D

RGM.
Do you remember that I said I would play alongside you quite happily? I think your a damned good drummer, not least a magician with your studio skills.

I don't talk lightly.

However.

Your songs need a singer. I'm about to fall into that trap too perhaps? We all think we can sing, I know I think I can too but really to do your songs any justice you need to looks for someone to provide that. Again I may fall into that trap and if I do I'll call it "guide vocal" and hope someone will be interested? And if not? Whatever?

Anyway.Your songs tracks are very good really. You just need that zap and zing a singer can give you.

Just my two cents and they probably mean nothing but there you go.

Cheers.

Chifpryer.

However you record anything PLEASE make sure you can understand the vocals (if there are any). Whether it's hearing a band live or on a recording one of my BIGGEST pet peaves is not being able to understand the vocals. Whether they are buried too deep in the mix, scratchy, too dirty, whatever, if I can't understand the words I get PISSED OFF. As far as putting drums forward, that's a matter of personal preference. If you like drums or if the drumming on a particular song needs to be prominent in your opinion, then make them prominent. It's a very subjective opinion. Record them the way YOU like.

1. I am a horrible teacher
2. My wife tells me I'm a thirty second time bomb
3. been there, done that
4. Its all one big hobby for me at this point in my life and the world keeps turning.
5. I have tryed working with the younger generation and they are brain dead or I am, not sure.
6. Start your mixes with the drum and bass track at -6db and fade in from their on the other stuff and save the vocals for last. Just a rule of thumb.
7. Now bloody get your ass in gear bub.

RG you are starting to show some humor. I think your drum tracks are great. I can feel some of the frustration in your words.
One thing,,, Don't let your your wife get you down, unless she wants to be on top. :)

I'm probably the last person who should be giving advice on recording and/or mixing, so I'm just going to say that was a great recording in my opinion. I liked the song too, reminded me of some of the stuff on Joe Satriani's Crystal Planet (minus Joe Satriani). I love that album. Keep on rockin' man.

Good stuff, RGM. And I agree with your -6 db starting point. If you start at 0, you got no place to go but down and that sucks the life out of your chops. I try to make the kick, snare, bass guitar and vocals about the same volume, then bring up drum overheads to taste, racks and other percussion a little lower, and ride the guitar and other melodic instrument levels as needed. And don't overcompress. Check out Soul Street Missionaries - Black And White. I got another one on my YouTube page too.

I'm nearly at the point to deal with this however. As most say it is really 'Up to you and Your ears' at the end of the day.

Thanks very much for the input people.
