I've not been on here as long as some of you folks but I thought I'd throw this one across your boughs.

We all create stuff and we all like to hear nice things said about the stuff we create right?

Stuff = Music

Anyway how important to you rate that on here for example? I scout around a lot these days and have found getting feedback from the masses in music forums very much harder, its sometimes brutal when you do get it, almost scary at times, or was........

I'm losing my fear though quite a lot through doing this however.

Actively involved?
A lot of people post music for us all to listen to in the hope that comment will be favourable. A lot of people do that and never come back, others just keeping dropping songs like bombs but decline to join the 'comment crew'. I think that's sad.

After all BM isn't exactly 'American Idol'

For me I think it critical that in a place like this where there are so many people with so much knowledge in the field. That peeps listen and post honest comment, don't you? I also think that folks who drop by each week/month to post something for it to be vetted actually take part a little more, yah know and offer thoughts on other folks stuff too.

The end result if people don't join in is that other people who do bother are less likely to say anything on posted music in future.

Not exactly what any of us want is it?

Getting painfully honest feedback is the only way to improve your skills just so long as you don't possess a great big fat head and think the world swims around you?

This is a bit long but its bugging me, sorry. Listeners comment in other places so long as they get to know you and you're not being a bug bare and...................

Yes some people just drop their songs on here and expect praise yet do not participate. Other people only comment on 'friend's' tracks. The best criticism I can offer is: would I buy it? Even if the answer is no doesn't mean it's bad, just not my cup of pee.

Maybe the Bandmix forum index should include a "Sample song" category or "Post Your Music Here" category. It's nice to get critical commentary from a few of us, but it would be much better to play those songs live in front of an audience and see the reaction of people. What a few of us have to say shouldn't either encourage you or deter you from bringing your music to a live audience. That is the real acid test of success or failure...

Ya know, Chippy, I TRY to give honest remarks in my critiques, but I just can't seem to find a way to say anything negative, cuz I'm so worried about everybody's feelings. I'm gonna work on that this year...

























Okay, I'm embarassing myself here!

I really DO think that honesty is the best policy when doing a critque. Some may think my honesty is "brutal." I don't think so, & though I prolly could word things better sometimes, my heart's in the right place, trying to help. I don't always take the time to work out the most tactical way to pan someone's "mistake," as I see it.

It doesn't really bother me that some ppl don't want to criticize the work of others. Some ppl just aren't made to say what they think, or just plain aren't interested in anything but thier own music, or perhaps they just worry too much about the feelings of other ppl that they think it better to not say anything. Eh...if you ask me for a criticism, I'll give it. It doesn't take too long, & the things I say may be able to help. I don't mind helping. In spite of how I word my posts, I am not really trying to hurt anyone's feelings, & I hope that is understood. I know I'm not the most genteel of men in this area. If something hits my ear the wrong way I say it, & try to explain why.

Someone recently thanked me for a "bare-knuckles criticism." I can live with that assessment, but I don't consider myself a negative person for it.

I think that overall most of my critiques are very positive, cuz most of the stuff I hear is quite good, or at least has a lot of redeeming qualities.

I hope to have some new stuff to offer up for the bashing, soon, as well.

When I do....I sure hope y'all will remember how fragile my feelings are & say only good stuff about it.

The number one problem I see with lots of reponses is people dont like a style of music and just hammer it cause they dont like the music. None of us can help that but, to me if you are just going to hammer a metal song cause you like country then its not adding anything.

Another thing you see on here is a different level of player. We have some folks on here that put music up that is just as professional and put together as well as what you hear on the radio. Then the next guy or gal is a brand new player getting his feet wet, who maynot be as good as the pro,but is really trying and wants to know what to do to be better. I think as listeners we should try to figure out at what level this person is at and try to relate to when maybe we were at that level.

Then lets face it. We all want a little self gratification and a pat on the back or we wouldnt want to put stuff up to begin with.

To end my worthless dribble. If you chose to comment try to say something negative or positive about the music that relates to the level the performer is at, and where you percieve this person may be going with their music. Try not to base it on your personal preference

You are right, of course, JW. I always approacg things as if the artist were trying to be a pro, & I guess I shouldn't really do that...but the sugestions I give along with the assessments are often gonna help them to better thier work, so I hope that balances everything out...

Didn't you just do that with Country music though? ;-)

I'll post my links to new songs. But I don't care if they get reviewed. I don't sell them, but I let people listen to them. Maybe one will inspire someone some how.

I don't try to "trick" people into opening a thread with a phony title just to push my music. I don't get friends to rate my music for "points" I get a real reward in just starting from nothing, and having a new piece of music show up somewhat miraculously on my DAW.

Then I listen to it until I am sick of it, and I go create another song. I am under no pressure to impress anyone, to further a career, or to turn music into a job. So it is always fun.

I get to practice, I stumble across new cool licks that I didn't know my fingers were capable of executing, I get to learn them for real.

I like someone saying they like my material as much as the next guy likes to hear that. But if I never hear it, that's OK too. My reward is in the creation. I was told I was tone deaf and denied a music education. I didn't find out otherwise until much later in life, and by accident no less. So whatever happens, it is a treat!!

For me, music is to be enjoyed with no strings attached.

I try to give as honest a feed back as I can. And appreciate the same in return.
The experienced players here have been instrumental in my slow but steady progression in the world of music.

It can be hard for one to give an detailed critique in a genre' one does not have an appreciation for.

i posted a link to some of my songs yesterday, felt a bit embarrassed like i was , err, cant think of the word, anyway, i just wanted honesty, phil did that, said my guitar sound was buzzy, which is cool, i will try to get it sounding less buzzy and more articulate as this is not the first time i've had this critisism, i think, if you made a catyegory purely for people posting thier music, it would get too big and no-one would listen, if you keep it to the general posts, with most peole, like me i think, too embarrased to keep pounding peope with, it will keep the volume down, which is good because more people will take the time to listen. maybe. just a thought
