Several factors determine the sound a drum produces, including the type, shape and construction of the drum shell, the type of drum heads it has, and the tension of these drumheads. Different drum sounds have different uses in music. Take, for example, the modern Tom-tom drum. A jazz drummer may want drums that sound crisp, clean, and a little on the soft side, whereas a rock and roll drummer may prefer drums that sound loud and deep. Since these drummers want different sounds, their drums will be constructed a little differently.

This is actually a pretty important post for musicians and bands seeking drummers. For starters, it prepares you for what you are going to encounter and how to spot one drummer from another. It also tells those of us putting together home studios what type of kit to buy/build regardless of who will give it the most mileage.

Traditional punk drummers will often have small kits, sometimes just a 3 or 4 piece. Some also like to have 2 snares-one with the snares disengaged.

A hard rock drummer will often have a 5 piece and moderate amount of cymbals.

Metal drummers generally have a 5-7 piece or more these days along with double bass and a generous amount of cymbals.

Industrial bands....uh yeah their drummer usually needs a power supply! :P

Very true but when I see a drummer with a 4 piece, single kick and 3 cymbals trying to play metal, I cringe.

every drum has it's own voice....yes there is a tuning to each drum...read drum score and it'll give you the notes, but, slit ajustments can make it sing.
