It’s that’s simple. There is no adrenalin rush in playing covers; for me anyway. It’s hard to find players that only want to compose, as most of the players just want to get out and play covers at a bar and drink beer. That is not for me!!!
You're going to have to be THE band leader and form YOUR OWN band. YOU set the rules and find people to fill YOUR band. Unfortunately many places will only hire cover bands. That's okay, because you're going to insert YOUR originals in with the covers and NOT TELL ANYBODY THEY ARE ORIGINALS. I do it all the time. The bands I've been in start out playing mainly covers (80%) and ALWAYS put a few originals in each set (Nobody knows they are originals). Then we gradually increase the number of originals. Nobody will be the wiser because your originals are going to sound BETTER than your covers because your band WORKS ON THEM MORE AT REHEARSAL. I don't want to hear anything like "we can't do that here." I say B.S. I say GET TO WORK. At the beginning you're going to have to "suffer" with mainly covers to get working, but as you gain fans start sneaking in your own material. This has worked for me for MANY YEARS. Now get to it...
