It never matters who did anything "first". I've heard countless stories about how so-and-so was finger tapping before Eddie Van Halen. But if you ask any guitar player who the Godfather of tapping is, they're going to say Eddie. He was the first guy who really popularized it and made it a part of his everyday arsenal. It didn't matter if he was first or not - it mattered that he was the guy who made it mainstream.
Gambale was that guy for sweeping.
