Michael Jackson's "This Is It" grossed $101 million at the world-wide box office over five days, making it the highest-grossing concert film of all time.

Sony Pictures paid $60 million to acquire the rights to the film, a behind-the-scenes documentary made from footage captured before the King of Pop's death in June.

"This Is It" dethrones "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour" as the top-grossing concert movie. That movie grossed more than $70 million world-wide when Walt Disney Co. released it last year.

The strong performance of "This Is It," along with the continued success of low-budget horror flick "Paranormal Activity," from Viacom Inc.'s Paramount Pictures, helped propel the domestic box office to big returns this weekend, running more than 5% ahead of the same weekend last year, even with the Saturday-night Halloween holiday. The overall box office continues to outpace last year, with ticket sales up by nearly 7.7% and attendance up by more than 3.6%.

Although "This Is It" set a new record, its domestic ticket sales fell below some Hollywood expectations. The film grossed just over $32.5 million at the domestic box office, according to studio estimates, while it made an estimated $68.5 million internationally during the same period. The disparity may owe in part to a cultural difference: U.S. audiences have long had a mixed response to Mr. Jackson and his controversial lifestyle while his reputation abroad has better weathered scandals.

Rory Bruer, who heads world-wide distribution for Sony Pictures, a unit of Sony Corp., said "This Is It" performed in line with studio expectations for North America and outpaced them internationally. "Quite frankly, it absolutely performed within the realm of our expectations domestically," he said, adding that the studio first projected the movie would open domestically in the range of $30 million to $40 million.

Sony announced on Sunday that, based on the strong performance of the film, it would extend the limited two-week run for "This Is It" for three more weeks in domestic theaters, through Thanksgiving weekend. Internationally, the studio will extend the movie on a "territory-by-territory basis," Mr. Bruer said, likely ranging from one week to three weeks in most territories.

"We put a lot of love and hard work into this picture," said Mr. Bruer.

Mr. Bruer added that the studio is so pleased with the film that it is even considering an Oscar campaign for the picture. "Michael was one of those few artists that touched everyone on the planet," he says. "What just seemed like a concert movie in the beginning has turned out to be so much more."

It's a shame that he couldn't see how much his last work has been appreciated, imho. That man worked his ass of for his fans, & it showed in his work.

Another who puts an amazing amount of effort into the show is Madonna, whatever you may feel about her music or her personality. She puts in one hell of a lot of effort into her work.

I could use some of that work ethic.

Madonna is one of the worst "famous" female singers there are. And she is also one of the best entertainers ever.

I couldn't agree more.

There is much to be said for a strong work ethic.

I got sh*t for pushing my old band toward perfection. But that is the price for the success, they "claimed" they wanted.

It's payment for the dreams.

It's the bounty that purchases someone rising above the fray.

Great things require great cost.
