I was contacted by a new company/site. He said that he had 2 industry contact's who place music for movies and tv.
There is NO Charge to me for an account; i believe they get a finders fee but am not clear on that yet or the compensation to the artist. I was contacted on myspace by another artist receiving the same offer and apparently form letter; We are impressed with your work and think you could ect. ect. He was very talented and his music definitely sounded like good sound track material.
It seems like a "why not, how much can I lose" deal but I'm still hesitant.

I just received the same solitiation from them. Not sure, they seem reputable...and you can't make money without spending money.
I'm not going to rush into this. They say they've already got a song matched to a movie...but they say they need to know now, and that's just moving a little fast.
Now, we're just coming out with our first self produced CD, and we're going to need help advertising and getting it out, so they may be of some help.
It's just I want the maxium bang for my buck. Anyway, I joined just to see if these people were worth doing business with.
Hope so...

We didn't sign...It just doesn't feel right. Please keep us all updated on whether or not they do a good job for you, because we are looking for someone to help us market our CD... I just find that someone wanting you to pay an upfront fee to market a song to a film that might be a good match wanting money upfront to do it. I mean, if they're serious about it they would make more on doing commission deals as even 10% of the $15,000 or so that I would think you would make on a movie score would be $1,500. So, if they really have an in to a movie, they're pretty stupid demanding money to market you to the movie.
If anyone has any one that they can recommend, please do.

Well they contacted a friend of mine and he has a little experience in selling his music. He went very slowly at it and made a non typical deal with them.

I got an e=mail from one of their A&R rep's as well just a few weeks later.
This is also just a few weeks after I was made the no money out of pocket offer from another such company...

the rash of these types of companies and offers I've seen lately, along with the 35k ripping I took from overseas sales of my music (that I found out about too late) makes me want to back away from both offer's.
My same friend was telling me about his friend being on tour in Japan and hearing his song on the radio there with a girl singing it.

I get bad mojo from this whole set up myself!

still no news or results from anyone?

If I wanted to get paid fast, I'd go play in a local bar.
It often takes 1 to 3 years. So - of course there's no results for me after 1 month. . . Jesus . . .
I'm still learning the difference between Music that is placed in the scene as opposed to on the soundtrack, and synchronzation licenses and the like . . .
Anyway . . .
Seeing as I'm intending to still be alive in 3 - 4 years, I figured I'd start now.
OK, that's all I need to say; I know 'popular' opinion is against me.
I'm not going to let others put me in the position of justifying what I'm doing; I don't have time . . .
But to see someone post "no news or results from anyone," (with the obvious implication being that "therefore 'it's all a scam') - was just kinda annoying.
But - I don't have time for this . . .
So - you just go ahead and keep saying that it can't be done.
:)
No skin off my nose.
The only skin I'm missing is from my fingertips, from constantly practicing and recording.

Personally I hope you pull it off Alan (not the skin)
I also am looking years down the road with our project.
I figure its been about four years since Ray asked me to pick up the guitar. Who knows how far we could go in four more?

why do you always throw so much tude around Alan?

When I get the same exact pitch that my friend got (who just happened to live next door) from this company and the same exact pitch from another company doing the same thing, and all within 3 weeks, well that just has to make me stop and ponder the situation!

I never said it was for sure bogus or that I wasn't going to go for it myself. I just said that it makes me leery of both offer's.

Your acting like I called you a dumb-ass or a sucker something. I too hope you have great success with them.

I have not only the right, but also justification to question these companies; as I said, I was reamed out of at least 35k by someone distributing my music in Europe.
So take your attitude to someone more deserving eh pal!

To see the negatives is one of the easiest things in the world. If you leave your mind to itself it will spiral down into ever increasing unhappiness.
To set a goal, believe it's possible, and to work towards it, however, requires effort.
.
Key word: work.
.
I never let the fear of the time it will take to accomplish something stand in the way of my doing it.
The time will pass anyway; I might just as well put that passing time to the best possible use.
.
Yep; be who you are, and say what you feel.
Because those that matter, - don't mind.
And those that mind, - don't matter.
S'ok, Hayden.
It's not you I'm objecting to.
If I perceive a defeatist mindset in a conversation I'm in, I vent.
That's what I perceive and object to, not you..
.
Those that know me, will see that there's one thing that'll always raise my ire.
And that is the expectation of failure.
I'm usually pretty tolerant, otherwise.

Sorry Alan, I was obviously mistaken about you directing that statement toward me. It must have been that other guy that posted that. How stupid of me!

Alan I understand about your feelings on giving up but it's more a case of when you smell something stinking you look for the source. I am just trying to use yours and others experience with this and like companies as a resource. It would be a viable scam to run on talented undiscovered artist's because of our passion and the sparsity of opportunities. So you can bet there are confidence men out there doing it!

I'm not the smartest guy and certainly not lucky so I have to really watch my ass in this business.

Here's my big question on the issue:
Why do they need anything other than our permission to shop our work; if a company is interested in a piece they could still make the commission on the contract by mediating it.
If they search out the quality acts and material, and they have the outlets they claim to have, then surely they pair enough material and profit enough not to require a yearly fee from obviously struggling musician's!

Now the other company that gave me the same pitch is asking no money but they also want me to upload material... they already have the link available to forward to any interested party's and could again, profit from mediating the contract.

So these are my concerns Allen.
I do hope that it is legit and I start hearing your material on my tv. Often!
But at the same time I don't want to see you, myself or any other artist's get their heart's and wallet's broken by some small group of con's!

As far as you & me... passion overtakes us musician's sometimes!

We all have 2 brains - a logical side, and an emotional side. As musicians, we are all expected to be more developed emotionally.
That's what music is all about: emotion, eh?
.
There's probably not a whole lot of dull, emotionless folks who go on to be great musicians . . . if so, they are certainly in the minority.
Probably most of the less-emotional musicians tend to need sheet music to play, rather than just 'feeling' the music, and playing by instinct, or, 'by ear.'
No matter . . . that's for another thread . . .
.
So, when emotions flare - that's cool - the emotions will probaly find their way into a song, somewhere down the line.
.
The business of music is the other side of the emotional coin.
And, honestly I don't have time to explain the business of music. I'd be typing 1/2 hour at a time, instead of 5 min . . .
But there's lots of good articles available.
Why don't you start at BMI's page - you could easily spend an hour reading the articles there . . .

lol Alan That would just twist my brain. Joining BMI was as far as I went. What I need is a good manager and agent to cover the business end. I prefer to just write and perform. Yeah I know; good luck with that eh!

Yeah, believe me I prefor to just practice, play, write, perform, and record.
Unfortunately - that is only about 33% of the equation . . . .
.
I'll need to rack up some money, first, before I can hire anybody to help.
