yeah..it's an age-old debate within myself.
Though I have Cakewalk Music Creator w/XP running as my current setup,
AND as a Win32 programmer I have to say I'm impressed with Roland's solid OS and the way with a DAW you don't have to manage a PC, and all that comes along with it.


I still wonder if I'd rather have a 2480...who knows.
Bummer is Roland stopped with the DAW market: sadly.

Maybe I'm one corrupted driver away from switching platforms..

Didn't mean to imply that anyone had insulted my intelligence, my apologies for any affront. Said what I did because many of you don't know I'm a quite competent computer tech, did it for a living for around 10 years.

Chip - thanks for the Audacity tutorial link, never knew that one existed. Bookmarked it to go back later and read a bit, no time right now.

I'd like to get Linux working for recording myself, tried with my Mandrake machine a couple of years ago and can't get it to record at all. It sees the signal, I can plug in my turntable and listen to albums, it just won't record with the built in sound recorder, and due to missing "dependencies" Audacity won't install. When they changed their name to Mandriva they also changed the update links, my machine won't go to the update site for those dependencies and now it's not even online any more, so I'll need a very recent version of Linux to even try. Still considering it for the Compuke I'm building, instead of XP, but not sure if I can get it to record or not. Ubuntu looks pretty decent but I haven't tinkered with it much at all, so I have no idea if it would work well.

There is a music recording specific live CD I would like to grab, that might be another option.

Hey me too. The only thing really stopping me at the moment is the lack of nerve in swapping out my studio soundcard and planting it into my linux box. I'm pretty certain the problems I am having with the JACK application under Ubuntu stem from the fact that my Sound card presently installed just won't work properly with it.

Yeah the Audacity thread..... Howlin pointed it out some weeks ago. It's pretty good and covers about every darned thing you need to know. Should be a sticky, I might ask actually.

Most of the sound cards I have are everyday run of the mill cards, but might have a good one and most should work with Linux. Did have a sound Blaster Live but not sure if I still have it.

I think I may have an SB card too lying around somewhere. I know that works ok on Windows. What annoys me just slightly is there there is no compatibility list on some Linux platforms.

Did find my guitar tuner though, which had been missing in action for around 3 or 4 weeks. fell between the Super Reverb and 1x12 speaker cabinet sitting in front of it, wire bag in front of them hiding it pretty well. (sitting so they make a corner.)

Most sound blaster cards should work with Linux, since Creative Labs is pretty much the prominent sound card company, they have kept up with compatibility pretty well. With my more recent attempts and recent Live CD's Linux has been working fine with most of the onboard sound chips too. I've used Ubuntu, Slax, Damn Small, Mandriva, Feather and Puppy with onboard sound and every one of them worked fine. Cloudy Skies (live CD for use with astronomy) has worked with every sound card and onboard chip I've thrown at it. But it won't use the telescope camera a friend just loaned me...go figure...sure wanted a nice picture of Jupiter, it's out right now, that was the bright one really close to the moon 2 nights ago. Saturn should be out later in the winter, we might hook it up and get a picture of it too, but will be using win2000, soon as he gets me the driver for it.

Well, I think my toe-jammer went the way of the encyclopedia in my infernal machine! Yes I am STILL getting those PLOP-PUPPS & it's wringing my last nerve sensor until its eyes pop out.

The Skizzix Organizer is compromized, & has fused with that darned Ooze-Missle again, too. Last time that happened, I had to pry them apart with a shoe horn.

That's what I get for lookin' through my Windows (tm), ain't it? I think they could use a good cleansing, & I'm tempted to pour some Draino into those lil vents on the side of my tower. My fan is fulla dog hairs. My keyboard is filled with cigarette ashes, & I hafta hit the space bar with a tire iron to get it to gimme some frikken space.

My monitor has been monitoring me a bit too closely, I fear, & the Big Brother on the other side of the screen is gettig antsy to arrest me for my web-wandering into such sites as "Girls Doing Questionable Things With WD-40," & "DIY Pipe-Cleaner Marital Aids," & "Barbie Dolls Gone Wild!"

As a result, my viral plumb-bob is out of level & my printer's out of stink, but I still have the Warp Driver working, thank heavens, or I wouldn't be quite so warped.

Excuse me...I think my ceiling fan's out of blades...I've been cutting things a little too close lately, & I'm geting that wired feeling again. Is it the electrical cigarette, or the invisible fence causing this?

Chip-four slots on the board, all populated right now. Pair of 128MB and pair of 256MB. (256 & 512, 768 total) It's 1066 speed, if you have 512 or up I can remove the 256 pair and it would be a nice upgrade.

I still think it's a memory issue causing trouble, not enough memory to save the file but it's strange that it reboots the computer, seems like it would just shut down the program. Oh well, not much I can do right now and will have to get a lot more DDR for the other one if I built it. Looking into options for Linux on that computer too, just not sure what OS would be good for it.

Also did some looking at Slax, live CD and they have a lot of modules available for download like Audacity, Ardour and others that you can add to a Slax CD without too much trouble. As long as I can make the hard drive writable without a lot of hassle that might work too.

check out the modules section, they have some good stuff, also found out they have a guitar effects module listed that sounds decent and some drum machine software. It starts out 190 MB, so that leaves plenty room on a CD for extra modules. Slax runs good, I have the basic Slax CD already and have run it on my laptop. (750MHz Dell w/192MB RAM, win2000) In fact I think I posted some comments here one day running it. It picked up the USB wireless with no problems, also video and sound, touchpad...lots better hardware detection than earlier versions like Mandrake 8 and 9.2.

I use XP, have since 2003, and never had a problem. Vista is, however, a collosal pain in the ass. It all depends on your software. I tend to use software that is freeware or Xp compatible. Soon i will upgrade to MAC, and All will be well. many tech schools often have occasional flea markets BTW. MIT has one every first monday.......

OK, first of all, the RAM is definitely compatible, it came from an identical computer and this thing will not recognize the wrong stuff, tried that already. It's the 1066 speed rambus, tried the other speed and it only recognized 64 MB of 512 and ran like crap. It runs great with this memory, everything else works perfect, and I've had no other problems except that now and then the power management stops shutting down the monitor. That's a video driver glitch and I've been too lazy to install another driver, it's easy enough to reset power management and it will work great again for another month or so.

2nd, I'm a computer tech, been building and repairing these stupid machines for 10 years, I'm not completely in the dark here, just frustrated. Just downloaded what I hope is a newer version of audacity to try since I Know it's that software, nothing else has any problems.

OS is win 2000, best one they ever made. I might be forced to try XP on another machine though, and I hate XP...but it's the only choice since that machine (faster one too) has a XP product key sticker on it. I'll just have to "dumb it down" some so it will run decent, XP is a serious resource hog. I'm hoping the different version of audacity will do the trick. The machine is already set up and ready to go, just have to find a XP installation CD. Should be decent, 3GHz CPU, at least 512MBM DDR, good sound and video, around 180GB drive space including the secondary drive in use now, which will swap over with all files still intact. That's the number one reason I never save pictures, music and so forth on the main C drive. With a second hard drive I can simply pull it and drop it into the new machine, nothing to it. All files are still right where I put them originally.

Usualy like what you have to say petey, but if you think win2K is better than a good XP pro install... then you're high as a kite.
