Does anyone remember this progressive band?

The music was written, for the most part, by Vangelis, the famed keyboard player who wrote that tripe for "Chariots Of Fire." Demis Roussos was the king of falsetto, & the singer for the band.

In '72, they put out an LP called "666," which was written for some European movie about the apocalypse. Sort of a 7th seal, Damien-Omen kinda flick.

The entire LP was inspired by the Revelations of St John the Evangelist. By its very nature, it sounds rather eerie, spooky, & wicked. It was ths band's last album, In fact, it was released after they had disbanded.

Ppl have been up in arms over this music for 30+ years, claiming it's used in Black Masses by satanists & such.

The last tune is so different, well, much of this thing is jarringly different, yet somehow it all fits together perfectly. I haven't put it in the proper order, though. Apologies all around for that.

This was, imho, one of the most powerful collections of music ever put together. It gives me goosebumps to this day. You can actually feel the evil, & the good (to a lesser degree), throughout this wonderful work of art.

I wonder if it's an accident that there is a middle-eastern touch to some of the songs, & recurring themes like "We've found the system / We've got the system" seem to touch on our modern abilities to clone & our other wild technologies doing things that may never have been planned for in the grand scheme of things....

I disagree with the ppl who claim that this body of work goes against the christian god, or whatever. It does, however seem to celebrate the other side of the coin, in places, I'll admit, but to keep things in perspective, it was written for a movie, not to convert ppl to satanism.

As a work of music, however, I find it to be quite beautiful. I would dearly love to find a copy of this in CD format. I've looked in the past, but could never find it, although I haven't looked recently.

I took this LP to STICKS one night, but it scared some of the guys...LOL

I'm curious to see what others think of this stuff, esp sans, coming from his perspective.

Well, I listened to as much of it as I could stand.
You can tell it was done as a movie soundtrack, gee just goes on and on.
Kind of like trying to listen to the entire Tubular Bells soundtrack from The Exorcist.
As far as my "religious" veiw point. I really cant offer one.
I will say this much. I dont have much tolerance for negative lyrical content these days. But to be fair I would have to sit down and read the lyrics all in context.
I dont get all off into that "OH THATS SATANS MUSIC" stuff.
Got enough problems dealing with my own tendencies to stray out of the light.

I s'pose it'd be rather difficult to put a positive spin on the apocalypse...LOL

I would never have expected that response from the good Capt, though. That one really surprized me for some reason.

I dunno what's my fave cut on this, but if I had to choose at gunpoint, I s'pose it would be the final cut, "Break." Those lil "shkeedle-dee-dah" scat parts are so cool, & so unexpected, they're almost funny, yet still kinda eerie to me.

This work had me convinced that Vangelis really was a genius of sorts for a long time, until the other stuff I heard from him convinced me otherwise.

Eh...okay, I'll shut up about it, now...I must be the only one who thinks it's so cool...it must be me...
