Oh... ...well, I think I'd best stick to what I don't know anything about already before I move on to something else I don't know anything about...if that makes any sense at all...

Is there a fix for my lil problem?

Hi Phil.
Sadly when you use a computer without looking first this will always happen and it will always happen (for now) on Windows.

It sounds like you have a really bad problem and I know what that feels like having had many same situations. The real trouble is that everyone attacks windows. So there are loads of programs to choose from to safeguard your PC.

However...........

The best thing you can do is NOT install anything until you have read the bio on it.

As regards your present situation.
Sounds like you need EVERYTHING wiping off after saving the important stuff. Then reinstall the system. Before you could write zeros but that software is disappearing.

Can you remember the VERY LAST thing that anyone did to the PC? This often happens where there are more users.

Hey guys, I think I have an AdWare/Popup/malware/viral problem - the wife took the pop-up blocker off, for some reason. I often play solitaire while browsing, but 1 time I went to click on my game, & it had been popped off by that awful "About:blank" outfit.

Now, even with the blocker on, I get occasional pop-ups. I also hafta wait for the damned thing to go through the loading of every page as I look down to see the hated "about:blank" crap invading my territory & slowing me way down.

Also - every line of text I see has certain keywords underlined in green. When I click on them I get some stupid page from About what has nothing to do with the text I was reading.

It's most disconcerting. I've looked into my add/remove progs but can't find the program listed.

I've been using Webroot Spy Sweeper, but evidently bipassed it to get this crap, & it isn't recognising it as the awful sh*t it is...

What can I do to get rid of this @$#%#$^ thing?

Seems like you're able to at least navigate the web. Try downloading and installing spybot S&D.

This is the URL Spybot lists as their home page on the app itself
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

That might help you find and remove whatever is possessing your pc. If it's a virus, then it's a little more complicated - and a bit surprising if you have Norton AV (I don't use it msyelf, but...) are you sure it's virus definitions are up to date?

Last resort, you can try downloading or running a free virus scanner (they have scanners you can run from your browser). Any geeks reading this have a good url for a free online scanner or Virus tool?

I'm gonna pretend that getting called a geek isn't getting old (jk, it's fine).

free virus protection: zone alarm

but many times - once you have a virus - unless you can lookup a specific fix based on symptoms... installing virus software alone likely won't do it and may not even work -worth a shot tho.

I humbly recommend getting paragon drive backup... it has incrmental backup software for all your data and you can make a backup of your operating system (windows), all drivers, installed progs, etc and put it on a bootable disk.

it's easy to use and if/when you get a virus/have a need to reformat - you can toss the disk in and let her do the work. this keeps your system running really light and quick and sure beats the hell out of sitting thru blue screens reformatting and then installing windows and then drivers and then...

note that if you go this route you want all your data on a separate drive from your operating system - you could do a partition but this has been known to slow efficiency for the op sys and specifically with music recording software.
