is anybody from an area without a real scene? most of the bands around here are country or bar bands. I suppose that is a scene, in a way.

It can be harder to find musicians in an area like this. I know there are a lot of people in my area that are into what I am into, but many of them are not looking for bands, or are snobby and unapproachable, but you can't blame them sometimes.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you can live in a LARGE town and find "no scene" too :) Well, if you are looking for anything besides "Wanted: Bitchin guitarist for Alice in Chains Tribute Band".

Classic rock, dj's, karaoke, and classic blues bands (the same ten bands playing the same 25 famous blues songs for the last 25 years) up the you know what. Play an original and find yourself jobless in Kansas City. Every original musician worth anything leaves this town. I'll have to settle making a CD and trying to market it on the web. It's like we're in the middle of nowhere living far in the past. It's a shame...

all scenes have their shortcomings. I grew up in greenbay/milw wisconsin... and felt much like the above comments.
Then I wen't to la thinking it would be the cats ass...
out there... every band is original music... they all know someone famous, and they are all about to 'break out'. It makes it so competitive that the club owners wan't you to front $500 just to play there... and you are supposed to make that up from the door, which is usually easy to do cause of the traffic, but you ain't gonna be doing much accept breaking even cause there's ten clubs on either side of ya(at least not untill you build a following) that are playing music too.
Go to a coffe shop jam like you see here: and wait in line thru 25 other 'stars' like you. Some good, some bad -like anywhere else I suppose. Don't even dream about playing a cover in either place... I don't care how good it goes: those ppul will eat you alive if you even attempt that. So your not gonna make money doing covers... your not gonna build a following at the coffee house, your gonna have to bet on yerself and hope you can come away ok. Add to that the FACT that 'you may think yer real hot stuff being the best thing outta where you're from... but you get out there and I don't care how good you are... there are ten ppul right next to you that are better... guaranteed'. I seen gtr players that went to my school and could out play any teacher in there... and they were nobodies. Guys you never heard of. I seen a guy that could play any classical music you want on the steel drums... you could literally name a piece and he'd play it right now... and he was living on the street. Guys down on the boardwalk playing unbelievable jazz for nickels.
Sax players on the street corner that will give you chills...
fantastic place to meet and play with musicians that are well beyond your calibur... and from every country and background.
Damn I miss it!
