My first blues band format was bass, guitar, drums, and harmonica. Most of the bands I've been in were this basic format. I've been in bands with horn sections, keyboard and horns, two guitars, etc. I've come back to the basic four piece blues band. We just added a blues harp player. I'm doing songs I did thirty years ago. I don't know how I remember something I did that long ago but I pull them out and do them without even listening to the original tune. I NEVER sang Hey Joe in my life but we've added that tune and it sounds like we've played it forever. Another song I haven't played forever is Caledonia. I literally haven't thought of it in DECADES, but the first time we rehearsed it was almost perfect. Mellow Down Easy by Little Walter is another song I NEVER sang before but we did it perfect from memory, and the other band members NEVER heard it before. It's exciting working with people who pick things up IMMEDIATELY. That's what being a professional is, being to jam to something you never heard before and it sounds like you've played it forever. Our first gig is Saturday with the new band members. We're having Dan Jones (Bluez 57) sit in. He's a world class blues harmonica player. Wait 'til they get a load of us...
