mrg2u wrote::? The thing w/that name is that it is hard to remember and where did it come from.? You say it is Hawaiian but you dont give the definition for that, only a loose translation in Spanish. I ran a worldwide definition search and got nothing back in all languages. House of Sharks is O.K. , but what genre are you in.? METAL.? Our band name is simply F.K.R. , Which is an acronym and I would tell you what that means but were having a contest to see which fan can figure it out first for backstage passes. and no, the word F--k Has nothing to do w/ it. I would go w/ House of Sharks as it is easier to remember and when people look for you on the web it will make it a lot easier to find you. It is true that most people will get frustrated and quit looking if there first search doesn't return the thing they want or they have to scroll five pages. to find it. they just wont do it. Another thing to think about as you go out onto the web is to have someone who knows HTMl code as you can embed key words into the background of the sight to direct traffic there like, Heavy Metal or Deathcore, which has become a popular search and also a popular description for hardcore metal. I would go w/ the members of your band to find something that works easily on the marketing end and is easy to remember. Some times you got to can the personal tastes and look toward what is actually going ti get you in front of an audience in the easiest way. One up and coming Metal band I have worked w/ is T.I. 22. That`s there stage name and it is on everything they have along w/ the full name which is Titanium Soldier. T.I.22 however is easy to remember. Want to check them out go to ti22band.com . Mrg2u, HaleAmano isn't necessarily a common Hawaiian word. What it is, is a stringing together of 2 words really. In Hawaiian language, "Hale" means house, and "Mano" means Shark. The "A" in the middle represents the "Of" or "Of the" structure of the word that puts the meaning of the word together. Hale (house) A (of) Mano (Sharks).

In Hawaiian culture, every family has a spiritual animal guide. In Ryan's family (Ryan being the founder of this band) their spiritual animal guide is the Shark. So obviously this name means a lot to him.

I personally posted this here because I know there are people here who were around for the first time I announced I was in this band. So it means a lot to me to also find out what their first impression of the name was as well.

This thread isn't gonna all of the sudden cause the band to change names. The question is mainly for public perceptions and opinions. And this forum is always a good place for me to get those from. If the name IS keeping us from gaining new fans, then we want to know. But you can't know unless you ask the question.

I'm still kind of waiting to hear from Craig and Neanderpaul. I would love to have their professional opinions expressed as well. It's only meant for us to understand different perspectives of the 2 names.

IMHO House of (the) Sharks would be better especially if your band plays mostly for English speaking crowds. It wouldn't matter if they played their music in front of Hawaiians because they speak English, too.

Another thing I've learned in my Marketing class is that you really should pay attention to what your Name could mean in other languages. If HaleAmano means "something not-so-good" in Mexican, then you need to change your name.

If the Mano is very important to Ryan, then he should find another way to use his Aumakua or spiritual Guide.

I like it the way you have it as your signature on the posts. Hale AmanO, and the House of the Shark underneath. First time I saw it, I "got" it. Why choose one over the other when they work well together?
That's my square root of 4 cents worth. :)

So what did you and your band decide? Are you going to keep the name or change it?

Hi Missinghome, good to see you're still around.

We're using both names at the moment. No serious discussion has surfaced in a while. We had to focus on the gigs this week. Last week we played with Pati and Three Houses Down. And Friday we played with Three Houses Down again.

So we've kind of been a little occupied with just keeping the music tight.

The long E sound in a band name sticks and sells: BB King, ZZ top, The Beatles, The Police, Free, Three Doors Down, . The short E is good too : Metallica, Megadeth, Led Zeppelin, Styx..etc.. anything that makes your mouth smile whilst you're saying and pronouncing it is good. :D

Very cool. I hope we're playing in that one. There's a band competition to to determine who plays the headlining night, so we have our work cut out for us.

Hope to see you there. It's a really fun festival.

I say keep it the way it is.
You have a good logo.
I thought it was pronounced Hahlee Uhmono, but who cares?
It can add an element of 'in the club' syndrome - you know, 'real' fans correcting newbies on how to pronounce it and stuff.
Also, I would include the background story on the name on your bands page, if you havent already. It's interesting.
And a quick google search on Hale Amano had several postings on the first page. (concerning the band, it looked like)
