(A thousand dollars later...) Computer was salvaged. Geek squad came in and fixed it up, only one small part was fried. It took a good four hours to go through everything and get it set up again. Electrician checked everything out fixed smoke detectors and one outlet, old one was scorched bad. AC and furnace blower motor work fine. Haven't got estimate on TV, not really worried about it though, it's not worth much any more. I have a high deductible that unless something fails this next year I'll be paying out of pocket for everything anyway. I found out that Kansas City Power & Light (electric utility company) has a great program for six bucks a month they install a surge protector right on the meter. If you have a surge that cause damage they pay up to fifteen grand and NO deductible. That's better than homeowner's coverage on the stuff. We have a few big sycamore trees right behind the house that apparently are real lightning attractors. On first thought I say cut them down, but on second thought they kept our house from getting hit directly. I talked with our neighbors who got hit the hardest and back on December 27 just last year at 4:00 in the morning a funnel cloud went right over our townhouse and pulls the chimney cover off their chimney and did no other damage anywhere in the area. I never even knew of this. They were up and heard the "freight train rumbling real close" and the next day found the cover in the next cul-de-sac. There was absolutely no national weather warning nor local TV weather station warnings. The funnel was embedded in a huge bow echo and not seen on radar. If the funnel had descended just ten feet down it would ripped our roof off. Like I said before, Kansas: Sh*t happens here!

I had renter's insurance before we bought here, & it's a good thing I did.

A tree fell on the power lines, but only broke the neutral line. Our lights went real dim, then they got real bright & the bulbs actually started exploding! I lost a lot of electrical stuff that time, but it was all covered save for the small $200 deductable. I got a new tv, microwave, alarm clocks, stereo equipment, etc. Yeah, it was a mess, & I didn't pad out my claim one little but!

But the operative question I have is - bob, are ya feeling better yet?

Yeah I'm a little better. Been taking a couple of naturopathic herbal concoctions. Turns out I have a bacterial infection. I was actually able to work today for the first time in about three weeks. A real bummer to live off credit cards.

Yes, definitely unplug the TELEPHONE LINES if nothing else during a lightning storm. I was a telecommunications tech (telephone-man) for more than 10 years and I can safely say that the destructive surge from the lightning bolt will come through the phone line 90% more times than the mains (120/230VAC) lines and scortch/ruin everything in its path due to lack of transformers etc. It's best to unplug everything, but for my house, the phone line (especially to the PC) gets unplugged every nite, especially during storm season.
Hope you're feeling better, Bob.
Isn't Kansas in "tornado alley"?
