So last night I FINALLY got to play in Berkeley Springs, after the gig got postponed due to rain last week.

There were 3 bands playing. The 1st was a buncha 20-somethings who were okay, but really need to work a bit harder to get it together a bit more.

The 2nd band was comprised of a 9 yr old on drums, a 15 yr old bassist, & a 13 yr old front man/guitarist. When they were starting to set up, I just had to grin. When they started to play, I just had to stand there with my mouth open. This 3-piece act was unbelieveably fantastic, esp for their age! They were playing stuff like "Play That Funky Music," "Red House," & a cpl songs off the new AC/DC that I don't even know. (Black Guys?) The 1st act stole the rug, & the drummer had some serious issues because of that, but O - M - F - G!!!! I almost didn't wanna follow them. Yes, they were that good. That singer was WAILING on his white LP, & getting those vocals out nearly perfectly. The bass player had a '77 Fender P that was in mint condition, & while he wasn't flashy, he was in the pocket & groovin'!

They were good enough that our drummer is hiring them for his party in Sept as the opening act. They should set a pretty high standard for the rest of the acts that play.

Our act, tentatively called "The Outer Rim," did pretty good. Mike (drummer) & I were pretty damned tight, but following the flat singer guy was a challenge a cpl times. I think he gets excited & loses it sometimes, as he skipped a measure or 2 on some songs, but we covered it up well. I think I did pretty good on the stuff I sing, & we got a lot of really good comments. The flat singer guy is constantly working in that town in thrown-together acts, & I was told by one person that this was his best effort ever.

Still, the puberty kids were what will stick in my head from this one. Whew! They were playing stuff that was old wheh their parents were born, & playing it like seasoned pros, with some great stage presense, too! Wowzers! I can only imagine what they will do when they hit bar-playing age!

It is always amazing to me when I see younger guys like that who display so much Talent. Bet it was a great show.
Does the flat singer guy know you constantly refer to him as the flat singer guy? We could do FSG as a code.
Glad it finally worked out for you man.

Stole the rug. As in literally hauled ass with the rug? Damn thats very small of them.

I love outdoor gigs, we don't get to do a whole lot of that here, because of the cold weather, most of the year

Same here! This is a band (The Hads) that I've recorded a few months ago, I'm also producing their upcoming CD, soon: http://headbangerstudio.com/Audio/TheHads/LedThoughtChild.swf

Guess how old they are?

Yeah, we have some kids here in Greensboro that are incredible too! Like you said, everyone kind of grins and admires their cuteness until they begin playing. Then everyone is blown away!

Are you playing bass or guitar in The Outer Rim? Following a flat singer can be challenging as a bassist. When I play, I'm primarily listening to the drums and melody instrument, but I play off the vocals too. There's nothing like an out of tune guitar or flat vocalist to make you cringe when you hit the right note on the bass. =D

I played bass in the Outer Rim, yeah. After the gig I stopped off at Tari's for the open mic, & I played a bit of bass & acoustic, both. Unfortunately, I also spent all the proceeds from the park gig at the bar & on breakfast this AM...

This was one of the few gigs I've done in awhile that paid less than $100, but heck, I didn't even hatfa take my amp, & everything was already set up when I got there, except our drummer's stuff, so I can't complain. I only had to play 1 set, too, so I don't feel bad about getting a paltry $50 for it.

Yeah, it's tough playing bass with some ppl. The flat singer guy (FSG - thanks sans!) lost it on a cpl tunes but I don't think anyone noticed. I went off key on the 1st song for 1/2 measure, & it sounded awful to me, but I got no comments from anyone. (What can I say? I hate Tom Petty, & I shoulda paid more attention, but my headbone can drift when I'm playing stuff I really don't like, sometimes. LOL)

Okay Dave - I'll bite. How old are they? They seem pretty tight & the singer sure sounds well-seasoned.
