When playing a bar gig, I always tell them, "Drink up out there. The more you drink, the better we sound. The more we drink, the better we THINK we sound." :)
Hey Ratsass you should tell everyone what you do when somebody in the audience requests Freebird. LMAO!

I've found that, too, over the few years I've spent on stage. Even in the most recent example, with RtC's debut last weekend, we had a couple of points where guitars went out of tune, or the sound guy messed with the mix in a way he shouldn't have, or where one of us outright screwed up.

Yet still, people were impressed when they were listening to us, including musicians from the other bands, asking how we got our performance so tight for a first show. I'm always amazed when I mention making mistakes and stuff while I'm playing live and people tilting their heads and asking "where"?

Simple. Whenever someone shouts, "FREEBIRD", I flip them off and shout, "NO CHARGE". :)

"Nobody notices your mistakes except for you" was taught to me a long time ago, as well as "you're your own worst critic".

This is another version called "Freeway To Stairbird"...also by the rev billy wirtz...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOMlX7jaQBs

The original version seems to elude me, but it came from the LP, "Stairway To Freebird/On The Rag Again," in 1984.

Stairway to Heaven has been both overplayed & over-recorded by many many ppl, including Dolly Parton, Dweezil & Frank Zappa, Tiny Tim, Bill Murray, Mike Myers, Stanley Jordan, Heart, Iron Maiden, Lou Gramm, Great White, Richard Cheese, Dread Zeppelin, Geoffrey Downes (from Asia), &, of course, Pat Boone. Conan Obrien also did a short version on his Late Night With tv show. I doubt, with so many versions available, that I could offer anything really new, or that ppl need to hear it done by me. That's why I play the original Wirtz version.

The words, as I remember them...

"In a redneck little dive
I'll be lucky to get out alive.
It's Saturday night in deer season.
There's a sign on the wall
Sayin' 'rock 'n' roll 'n' have a ball'
And I hope my ethnic joke
So delicately phrased pleases.
There's a redneck little geek
With tobacco in his cheek
Who's yellin' in my face 'hey, man play freebird!'
He looks emotionally unstable
As he pounds on the table
And his girlfriend keeps screaming
'Play some Judas Priest.'
When she yells her cellulite shakes
From too many Little Debbie snack cakes
And her belly's floppin out in rolls
Deeply creased..."

& it gets worse from there...

There's a lady I knew
Who is full blooded Jew
And she's buying...a 7-11.
When she gets it, she knows
When the other stores are closed
That her prices can soar high as Heaven.

:) :) :)

Philby, a good an experienced musician will have those moments of bad vibes due to wardrobe/echnical malfunctions, illness or someone is missing in the band. The ideal thing to do is to play on. The ability to do this is priceless.

Yeah, Mary, I've been doing just that for 35 years or so, but still, it never ceases to amaze me how disconnected the audience is to what is actually happening. I guess they really need that illusion that all is perfect or something...

Yeh, they paid for admission and I've never heard of a refund from an establishment because "the band sucked" lol.
.. And yes, "the show must go on" no matter what.
