It can be pretty tough to get to band practice when you have kids, now that my kids are older, it's much easier. Where I live in Central NY, almost every band I was in, there were people that had to drive about 50 miles just to get to band practice, everyone has to work to pay for the gas and car to get to practice, it's sort of a catch 22 for many people, I've been in 5 bands at once last year...and many weeks didn't have a single band rehearsal because someone from each band couldn't make a day and rescheduling wouldn't work.
The furthest I've had to go for band practice is from Enfield, Connecticut to Schenectady, NY, about 110 Miles, a couple times a week. What really sucks is when you drive 110 miles...to find out nobody is there....and nobody bothered to call you to say it was off!
Just getting people to show up can sometimes be 90% of the battle, I usually try out and join about 4 bands before I find a workable group that meshes and can get stuff done. Don't waste your time trying to change people hoping thing will get better, they usually don't and it's just a waste of your time.
