When I was younger I always had a guitar on my lap. As years go by I practice less but rehearse and play out more. If I didn't have this damned job....

At present I dont practice daily as I should.
Partly due to my day job / family obligations.
Partly due to it being so freaking hot in my studio this time of year.
I run the music, scales, my lead rolls and such in my head quite a lot still.
The band only rehearse once a week due to the miles of asphalt between us and being we are all family men. Of late this has been regulated to playing a few familiar tunes as warm up, then hashing out the structure for our new songs that we are adding to the repituar.
If I had any electrical skill. I would invent a recorder much like the Zoom.
It would have an input andout put so that one could be placed between each instrument and the PA, enabling us to simultaniously record a track from each instrument and mic, while we rehearse / play.
It could all be mixed down latter for some good recordings that maintaine the "live" energy.
That be so cool.
I think I'll try to adapt the Zoom line output to 1/4" and route it to my PA today.
I can use my amps cab voiced line out asthe Zoom input.
Wish me luck!!!!!

Hello, I am new here!

I practice for maintenance with a metronome 7 days a week. My main goal is to achieve accuracy, dexterity, finger independence and speed for shredding. The whole practice session takes about 3 hours on a moderate tempo setting.

Broken down into segments, my regimen consists of:

1) Scales and Modes = 70 positions (Alternate Picking)
2) Cycle of 5ths/4ths (Alternate Picking)
3) Arpeggios = Major, Minor, Aug, Dim, Dom (Alternate Picking)
4) Chromatics on all frets (Alternate/Reverse Picking)
5) Hexatonics (Alternate Picking)
6) 7th arpeggios (Alternate Picking)
7) Triad Arpeggios (Sweep Picking)
8 ) Chord Inversions (Strumming/Fingerstyle)
9) Pentatonic Tapping (Tapping)
10) Sightreading (Aural/Visual Training)
11) Improvisation over Sequences (Free Form)

here are some reading guides that will help you develop your own system:

When I started at 13, up until around 20 I practiced 6-8 hours a day everyday. Now I just pick up my nylon string once or twice a week, and plonk at it in front of the TV. The only time I really pick up the pace and get my playing back to what it used to be is when I get a new guitar. The last time that happened was with my Gretsch back in 2005. Like I said on the last thread on this subject, I don't really lose speed, or accuracy when I'm out of practice...the two areas that fall apart for me, are vibrato, and knowing what to play when soloing. There's just no natural flow of ideas coming together, and my solos just sound like separate riffs with a jarringly abrupt segue from one to the next.

I like the way Hayden said it back in February.

I try to play a little every night to mellow out after workin' my nutzoff all day. Usually its the 'ol piano, sometimes I rip it up on the synths full blown through the PA, or I might be in the mood for some noodling on guitar, recorder, theremin, balalaika, clarinet, sax or harmonica. In any event, all playin' is good. :)

When ever I'm engaged in a band, going over songs on the set lists is taken more seriously, but never to the extent of Crip's practice schedule.

(of course, I also spend a fair amount of time broadening my musical horizons watching YouTube videos and yackin' on this forum!

(I'm feelin' inspired, better go practice now)........

later,
Howlin'

I know what you mean I used to practice so much more when I was younger but nowadays I just cant find all the time I really wish I had time I could practice more. Right now I practice probably like an hour or so?
