Just saw Moon tonight. The film with Sam Rockwell and Kevin Spacey.

One word: AWESOME.

Go see if it's in a theater near you. Distribution is limited. I had to drive two hours to see it.

Spacey is one of my faves. He always finds those quirky, interesting scripts to do. With the exception of that stupid "Superman Returns," I've liked everything I've seen him act in.

"SyFy" is a stupid name. It's meaningless.
What PR bean-counter came up with that, anyway?

Please notice, SF Channel: there's no "Y" in either word.

I started reading SF when I was 4.

But - anyway I like REAL science fiction.
That's science fiction which is written by science fiction writers who have at least a 6th grader's grasp of Science.
Most "science" fiction nowadays is written by "writers" who would certainly flunk a 3rd grade science test.
Most of the stuff on the SF channel - while entertaining, is ludicrous.
SF channel - how about putting the SCIENCE back into science fiction?

However - all that being said - I still tend to watch that station a lot.

At first, I thought SyFy was stupid too. But then I heard the the people in charge of that decision talk about why they did it and it made sense.

They're branding themselves in today's marketplace. They're trying to create a unique brand name that gives them some flexibility in their programming.

"Sci Fi" channel wasn't a brand name - it was a description of a genre. That was very limiting for them. It also had no brand identity. A lot of stuff is "Sci Fi". If you read Sci Fi, you might not immediately identify it with the cable channel - you might have thought about a genre of books or films or whatever.

By going with SyFy they're creating a brand name for their own network. It's like FUSE or SPIKE. It's a unique brand name, but it still has an identity. And it fits in with the current marketplace.

In the old marketplace, stuff like VH1 and MTV and CBS... those channel names had some kind of nomenclature that had meaning. MTV was Music Television. VH1 was Video Hits 1.

But in today's marketplace the name doesn't necessarily have to have such a limited and well-defined meaning. It can just represent a whole bunch of related things. If I say SPIKE to you, what do you think of? Probably several different, but related, things if you're a regular viewer of SPIKE.

SyFy - although it might look stupid - is at least unique. You can't misidentify it with anything else now. You know when you read SyFy that the person who wrote it is talking about the television channel, and not a genre of a book or film or whatever.

As a unique brand name, it will give the SyFy channel a bit more latitude to put some other types of programming on their network that might not be traditional Science Fiction. Hopefully they won't stray to far from the Science Fiction offerings that has defined them, but as long as they're putting quality programming and getting ratings, I think that's what matters most for them.


Anyway.. I don't think the name is awesome or anything, but I understand their motivations for doing it. I think the bottom line is that you've got to put on programming that people want to watch. If SyFy feels like their new name gives the some latitude and they put some better programming on because of it, then the name change will have served its purpose.

And after a while, no one will remember the original name much anyway.

Yes Chippy, I am an absolute Sci-Fi nerd. My favorite channel is the SyFy channel in fact I am watching it right now I am watching Eureka. I guess it is because I grew up watching the space race in the 60's and watched on my 12 inch black & white t.v. as man landed on the moon 5 times and the greatest failure Apollo 13. By the way I love science fact also. The original Star Trek and all the Star Trek's, Stargate SG1 and all that kind of stuff!

I like Eureka too J. Funny stuff! Have you seen Warehouse 13 yet? That's kind of interesting too.

I have a ceiling fan that sounds just like a Cylon interceptor.

Yesterdays sci fiction is todays reality in so many cases it often scares me to think of what tommorrow will look like another 20 years from now. I wonder at all the inventions that have come along that were dreamed of a century or more past.
