How about the Melobar.

http://www.gbase.com/gear/smith-mosrite ... 7-sunburst

First time I heard of one was on some TV show with the guys in Poco, who used on one a few of their songs.

That is an odd instrument for sure Billy.
9 or 10 strings? But the prototype best played with 6.
Who'd thunkit.

I've previously posted a lengthy digression about my experience with one of my old guitar players (I believe it was late 70's) who bought a brand new Travis Bean six string. If you arent familiar with them, they featured a solid aluminum neck, and the body was cut from Hawaiian Koa wood. It first seemed a guitar made in heaven, until one considered its great weight, (great for sustain but hell on the back after a three set gig) and the fact that the unstable thermal nature of aluminum translates into sever tuning problems when the axe is taken from the cold Pocono winter into a cookin' beer joint! . Nice collector item, beautifly made, but ,not suitable for playing in a band. You could probably do a single with them, however, since the damn things tend to stay in tune with itself.

I also knew a bass player who bought a bass version Travis Bean. He didn't keep it for long. That same dude once played a Hagstrom eight string bass. He Regretted parting with that particular axe.

(Dajax, I dig this thread, great topic. I'll think of some other weird guitars that crossed my path later)

Here's the one I want.

Also once had a Mosrite double neck Ventures model, cool guitar. Wish I still had it..Identical guitar at bottom of page here

http://www.edroman.com/guitars/mosrite.htm

Same finish as mine, exact same guitar. Very neck heavy, barely playable standing up, sitting down it was nice.

Bill,
I once had a Moserite six string. I regarded it as a very playable guitar. It was the only guitar that didn't hurt my dainty keyboard playin' fingers.(Guitar playin' is not my forte') I too wish I would have held on to it. I never seen a double necked Moserite or a 12 string version. Very cool! :)
later....

I bought a Fender something (solidbody) back in the mid-70s, it wasnt a tele or strat.. damn if if I can remember what it was???
One guitar that I loved that didnt take off was that Ampeg clear plexiglass guitar. I loved that thing (never had the money to buy on tho..)

Those Plexiglas git-fiddles, produced by Ampeg back in the day, are called Dan Amstrongs. I too regarded them as very cool, and if I had one and let it go, I'd be kickin' myself in the ass, since they are going for about $1500 used.

I was given an old Fender Music Master by a good pal and bandmate back in 68. I've since bestowed it upon my bass-playing son, who is still trying to figure out what to do with the two extra strings. :)

Currently, I an in possession of an awesome early 60's vintage Fender Mustang which has been permanently adopted into the family. I shelled out a whoopin' $15 for it at a thrift store a couple of decades ago. Back then I gave my old pal, and renowned Dylan guitar tech, the late Cesar Diaz, a call to inquire what the Mustang might be worth, and he said (to the best of my memory)....." John, I will give you $300 for it without looking at it". I declined the offer.

:( I generally end up paying $300.00 for stuff worth $15.00.
I hate to admit it but I am a delayed impulse buyer. I'll see something thats just allright and dream about it for three months untill it's just the coolest thing ever.
My motto, buy high and sell low.

Yes cool thread, nice guitars, hummm which one should I dream about till the price doubles?

I've been looking for a guitorgan for years, so I don't hafta hire one of them pesky keyboard players!

I caught the last keyboard guy that jammed with us out in the parking lot smoking crack in his car. I went back into the bar & brought out about twenty ppl, who soon were all banging, rocking, & scratching on his car for a taste...LOL...one of the less memorable nights we had playing, but the aftermath was hilarious, with him trying to hide his torch & lil glass pipe under the car seat, with his car surrounded by supposedly screeching crack heads. It was a scene straight out of "Night Of The Living Tweakers."

He seemed less than amused as he packed up his stuff, right after that, & sped out of the parking lot.

I wonder why he never came back...

No offense, HJ, but I haven't had a lot of good experiences with most of the key guys around here, so I'll just hafta tease you, since you play 'em.

Philby,
My cousin, who is even older then me, and has been rockin' continuously since the 50's, is an outstanding guitar player. ('cept in the early 60's he blew trumpet in the navy band).

anyways...

Some years back, Cin and I got out to see him play, and he had one of those Guitarorgans. He used it on Whiter Shade Of Pale, and I gotta tell ya, that thing SUCKED! (I've heard bands do keyboard dominant songs with no keyboards and they usually sound just fine.

Nothin' like good honest guitar playin' in my opinion.

Not so much a guitar, but I would have to say the Chapman Stick (maybe it qualifies, since you could use bass and guitar strings on it). There's probably a lot of them out there, and seem to have been adopted by a few prog-metal bassists, but Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel, Pink Floyd) was the one that attracted me to it. I was amazed to see one being played on some VH1 rewind show...on that 80's Matthew Wilder song, "Break My Stride"!
Ten or Twelve strings, could be tuned however you wanted, and the primary technique was tapping. The price was as hefty as the mega sized neck.

Sorry, no pics. Google it.
