If the fulcrum is in the back. How would you return it to the up position?
If the spring was at issue I would just get a lighter spring of the same length. Or you can lighten a spring by sanding it to reduce it's diameter.
I have done this with revolver springs to lighten the pull.

It looks like the pivot is not in the very back, so this may be do-able. The only problem I can think of is the screws loosening after time, then they'd have to be re-torqued down not-too-loose, not-too-tight.. maybe some thin rubber or nylon washers in there might help. Along with some thread-lock. And San's idea of the lighter spring maybe put in the correct place might do the trick. It'd take some experimentation I guess..
