Firstly I consider that one of the best compliments I've ever had coming from a well qualified and talented person such as you, I seriously mean that too, thank you!
'Day in the west' was analog drums x2. Basically recorded an idea of a backdrop then recorded over them with the second set, both are live and untouched.
I added a Pro52 (VST) to give it some depth but the whole thing needs vocals to show what that idea was about. I cannot afford a decent Mic at the moment.
'Knocking Valve' was basically and arrangement made up of depeche mode with arpeggio where the keys changed. A drum track is missing but I want that to be analogue that will I use through midi with drum voices. I found out my Keyboard has no Midi out so I'm stuck at present. No loops, again live. Just an idea really to be honest.
On the nail. 'Got a Minute' is one of the tracks I am working on. To get where I want to be I realize that I have to be cook and eater which is truly difficult, sometimes seemingly impossible to be completely honest.
There are a trunk load of songs and stuff but the real dirty work needs to be done first and that's so far as I am concerned is finding out how to go about it really?
My best music came about when I finally decided to meet my audience's preferences - halfway with my own preferences.
Exactly now what I am trying to find out Alan. I know hardly anyone will listen to what I want to play but I hope that sometime down the line I'll be able to please other folks as well as keeping myself happy.
Can I say I am truly flattered without it sounding as though it is patronizing? I'm way behind other people. Trying to play catchup whilst learning is proving tiring but things like this make it all very much worth it.

In "Day in the West," - did you play the drums? . . . because the drums are 90% of the song.
I suspect it would have limited appeal to most audiences, because it sounds much like a repeating loop. Yes - maybe it IS a repeating loop - but I don't think you want it to sound that way . . . know what I mean? More variety will increase appeal.
Maybe you can try remixing, w/ the drums slowly receading into the background.
Then just listen to it, over and over . . .
- see what else developes.

"Knocking Valve" sounds like a loop - song. I probably wouldn't loop it more than twice before changing it . . . it's off to a good start.

You might consider cutting the volume of the cymbals by 20% - that's a personal preference, though.
I'd add a 'non-busy' part somewhere, as a bridge.
And in the bridge, I'd add someting new and unusual - but not distracting from the song.
I'd capitalize heavily on what you already have.
Come up with a short intro.
