I don't use windows for anything except the music studio at present. I have 5 PC's 4 are running Ubuntu which I've found to be very good indeed.
I've run Jack and it seemed to work ok. Audacity of course.

Recently I found that my Delta series card was compatible with Ubuntu so I may just pop it into this machine and see how it fairs?

There is a good list here too:

Hmmmm

I've just downloaded and evaluation copy or reaper and am running it under wine. Looks a fine program, a little akin to 'Cubase' in some ways but very well laid out. A personal licence is just 60 bucks.

There's a blog here if you are interesting in reading up?

As soon as it loaded and asked me if I wanted to run it, it just ran, hardly any stutter in movement when scrolling the app either. This system I'm testing it on is very bare, just 775 Ram and and AMD 64 - Nothing much at all really.

Pretty impressed so far I have to say.

Edit: I forgot to say... It's bristling with VST'S and effects.

They have a LiveCD version available so you can check it out before installing to your hard drive. :-)

Thanks, dude. Will look into it later.

A lot of the Documentation is missing from this release. If you are new to Linux and recording it might be best to choose something where you have both documentation and a good forum in which to ask questions.

Nothing like getting frustrated is there. :D

A friend asked me whether it was possible to record sound from such things as youtube and other places.

I just found this which explains it far better than I could.

My Audacity installation is a bit broken but this might be fun for some to try on Linux.

I ALWAYS have trouble with Audacity on Linux. Finally downloaded Audacity for Windows on my old IBM Thinkpad laptop and came out of my headphone out on my home stereo (I have my computer with Linux running through it), and used my laptop to record on Audacity and it worked fine. I don't think Linux will ever beat Windows until they find a way to get it to automatically recognize each computer's hardwares and set itself accordingly. If Linux could do that, Windows wouldn't stand a chance unless they cut the price down to near nothing.

Hmmmmm
I think the problem here lies with Audacity myself. Everything I have that needs sound/Media/Audio works except Audacity (What you hear) but I do think it has a lot to do with this internal card? I was planning to switch it out for my M-Audio before the weekend but got tied up.

If you want something that works out of the box I can recommend Xandros but it will cost you $100 Bucks plus an annual subscription to Codeweavers version of Wine.

As for me? I'm not giving up on it because I know of many people using it and getting good results. Again I'm pretty impressed with Reaper which also has a 'What you hear" function but this like others is a windows app but runs sweat under wine.

Hope this helps?
