So far and since my old box died I've dabbled a heck load with Ubuntu.
I have Flash/Dreamweaver/PhotoShop and even my accounting software running on just 512 MGB of ram

I found out too that my sound card, an audiophile 2496 is also supported for the studio. Cakewalk is sure to work but I will leave off saying anything until I see Cubase load too with all of its peripherals which are of some worth at the moment.

It has not crashed once while doing anything in over 10 days of grueling testing which is why Linux/Unix is still the worlds #1 server software.

If you have an old PC why don't you download Ubuntu and give it a whirl? Although at first it might seem a strange environment, (I prefer it) it really does what it says on the box.

Yeah, Chippy. My newest computer has been running Ubuntu for the past couple of years but I had some weird sound issues with it so had my older PC with XP still going for that stuff. Well, last year the motherboard on my older one died, but I couldn't bring myself to put XP on my newer one instead of Linux. Just did a clean install of Jaunty Jackelope and everything works great. Glad it does as I wouldn't go back to Microsoft unless I ABSOLUTELY had too.

9.04, Chippy. And, no, I didn't know to type that in. Any questions I have about Linux, I get ahold of my son. He's real sharp at that. I know zilch about coding or any of that, but I'm learning little by little. At least I knew what the Terminal is.

No, no. I said I DID know what the terminal is. he he he. My son has me use that a lot, but he has to tell me what to type in there or else send me an e-mail that I can copy and paste. I'm not a COMPLETE newbie, just pretty dang close.

Been using Mandrake for several years, 8.2, 9.1 and 10, a few live CD versions like Puppy, Damn Small and Feather, and recently got my hands on a copy of Ubuntu but haven't tinkered with it much. Got a road trip dropped in my lap not long after I got it, so I really haven't fooled with it much yet. It's installed and running, seems as stable as Mandrake has been but I haven't tried any of the sound related stuff yet. I have a couple of hard drives for this laptop and have been thinking about Linux for one of them, haven't really decided yet, mainly because the wireless support is sketchy at best.

It's a version that runs completely off the CD and when you reboot, Winderz loads untouched. It never affects your hard drive at all except to create a swap file, which windows does as well. The Linux swap file does not harm your hard drive or your windows OS at all. I've used it lots of times, with no problems at all.

if I can get everything to work right without an internet connection I'll be checking out Ubuntu for recording later on, not sure what it will do yet, I've only tinkered with it for a couple of hours.

Ubuntu works just fine for me so far Paleo.
Wine also works very well. I've yet to install recording software but I'm not missing the various "YOU MUST UPDATE NOW!" Messages at all.

I'm not just playing with it because I know it can run from a usb drive, CD or image.

Finally I can get away from windows but it is.... as with all things learning curve.

Kudos for doing that Pete. I was way behind you in terms of trying this but I do thing Linux is THE future.

Back in 98, so many progams were coming out ,to work with the WINDOWS 98 platform, you couldn't keep up with all the different programs for sale.

Half of them did nothing they promised.

My wife bought me a little Mac note book about 9 months ago . Loaded with LOGIC . [she just wanted me to start recording again]

I have had a little fun with this set up, and it was really not expensive . IT IS VERY STABLE. And I don't have to play games to save cpu power to run one more track of reverb.

IN THE END WHAT COUNTS IS WHATEVER WORKS WITHOUT MAKIING YOU A FRUSTRATED COMPUTER GEEK.... When all you wanted to do was play music .

I think I worked it out (anyone can) that it's about 1.5 years before a new product reaches the market? (Correct me if I'm wrong please?)

I've still yet to try a lot on Linux but the box itself is running very sweet. I guess I'll lose a lot of Midi options, I'm not totally sure about that at the moment but it's catching up very fast.

The one thing I do get annoyed about is that Microsoft obviously ploy their into getting codecs into machines on store shelves meaning that Linux for the most part gets left behind (Sometimes). But as a regular machine this box really does work flawlessly. If that can be put into a music theatre I am going to be well happy Giongly.

I agree. Linux is growing and hopefully it takes over both Windows and Mac.
One note: When you decide to try it (assuming you don't know your computer well), get someone who knows what he's doing to set it up for you.

If you're installing on an older computer, it won't matter so much, but if you're looking to buy a new computer and use it for recording, the best thing to do (if you're not a computer geek) is to order one with Linux pre installed. It doesn't cost any extra and they'll set it up to work with whatever sound card you order with it and save you lots of headaches.

The live cd is the way to go to check out linux and see if you like it. I have several. Feather, Puppy, Damn Small, Ubuntu, Mandriva, Knoppix (my favorite) and Cloudy skies, which is astronomical software. Lots of star charts and other goodies for clear nights with a good telescope. Puppy is nice, pretty small, and works great. Some of the others have a GUI that will be very foreign to Winderz users, but so far all of them have worked great and very stable. One of my home machines has been running Mandrake 9.2 for several years, I use it almost exclusively when I have an internet connection at home. Right now I'm on my laptop using wireless in a parking lot...windows 2000. Probably the best Winderz version ever released. I absolutely hate XP, it's what made me start checking out Linux shortly after it was released. I think my first copy of Mandrake 8 was installed 2 months after XP hit the shelves, maybe quicker than that...
