ZXYZ wrote:The newest rock/metal music out there seems to have a lack of the familiar structure that was predominent for the majority of the 60s-90s. Am I behind the times?? Probably. I may still do lead solos (if you can call 'em that) anyway, just to be different. lol :P Do Y'all notice any lack of guitar solos in a lot of today's rock music? Or is it just my imagination?

Bypassing, bypassing, bypassing.....

Kurt Cobain killed the guitar solo in popular music (w/ the exception of Country).

I still get a kick out of people who say they hate Country music, but do like bands like the Eagles, the Allman Bros, America, Skynyrd... I can understand the older stuff (Conway Twitty - to which I can only stomach so much), but since the 80's most Country music IS today's Classic Rock. Brad Paisley is a good one to listen to for some great guitar work.

Hopefully the guitar solo will revolve back around to mainstream soon.

I think country has gone so format that it has pretty much lost all of it's soul. I prefer Hank Sr. to Jr. there used to be artist's in country music but now it seems to be strictly business and as long as people will buy the same ole format, they won't change a thing. The new or "modern country" is just as formatted with a lot of hot lick leads thrown in. But still the same ole same ole!

Kings X were badass!

LOL Country music is "family friendly".
My son and I stopped into a local sandwhich shop to eat while my other son was at a tennis match. While we were in that store they played 7 country songs on the radio. 5 of them were about cheating on your spouse.
Thats generaly not a behavior that is allowed in my family.
Oh and the other two songs were about party / sex and alcoholism.

I love guitar solos! When you think about it they have been replaced in a small form by keyboard riffs in our modern age.

Just a little run here and there so to speak.

Anywho I'm terrible at them though if pushed I could write one but it would be orchestrated and not ad-lib. Something I hate.

I just realized that "MODERN ROCK" Doesn't have solos ,because none of the kids can play them, nor can any producers recall any young players that actually had to spontaneously create.
Just as funny is when modern altrnative rock sounds the same as "LED ZEPPLIN' AT THEIR WOOORST!!!!!!
FACE IT ... ALOT of music is being relabled. YOU CALL IT WHAT YOU WANT TO!!!!! Not much of it is new.... just relabled, THIS TIME WITHOUT as much talent...... Just listen to the solos if you disagree..... THERE ARE NOT MANY!!!
Quick way to get around that problem.

Yes I've noticed that in a lot of today rock and pop music, the chord progressions and structures are still good but it seems the solo's arte being left out. In certain songs I try to put a solo in where I think it will fit and it works as long as you don't mind changing the song a little.

Are you adding bass solos, or do you play guitar as well?
Whne you have an opportunity put some of your stuff up on your music profile for us to enjoy,
