In that case you are in an enviable position and even at your age your world is your oyster perhaps.

Good luck with your choices, I hope they bring everything that you wish for.

At 48 years old I'd stick with the day job and work on early retirement at 55 or so. Then you can do whatever and have the financial where-with-all not live in poverty in your golden years.

The band maybe making money now, but what about in 6 months, we've all been through the life-cycles of a band. And going on the road, if that what you're doing, will only bring out the bad side of personalitys. Have you ever been on the road (touring)? It's not as glamorour as it sounds.

What about taking a 6 month leave of absence from work, if it's slow at work. If you could work this out with your boss you could see how it's will play out in the band.

its joke right. you want it both ways. if your in the music biz for money or whores well wake the frig up.
I play cause i have too. lost friends, family you name it. I still play. I could have loads of dough working for the man. Am skilled at all trades and then some. worked on skunk works projects for area 51. also ibm research dept. worked with those fellows. dig. big friggin deal. I am a guitar player and when i get a chance to perform my art the crowds knows it too. no bullshit just a fact.
So my friend if you even have to ask well then take the job and all the bee hive benefites and leave the muse to those whose are possessed by it.
oh i need a drummer live on a ranch nearest neighbor is over a mile jam all nite. no drugs but beer is plentiful. am a voting member of grammys s if that means anything.
to the dreamers out there been around since woodstock if a career is what you want the muse aint for you but if when all else is in the shitter and you pick up your guitar and wail well welcome to the club.
oh Im 56, lifes way too short to have me bend over and grease my slats for a few more years on the back end! But thats me.

spent way too much of my life asking that sm q.

making music a 'job' almost ruined my love for it... so I got a bs in cs and became a sd. I figured "no matter what I do for a job it's going to be work... so I might as well get paid for it".

Take the job, and when you have moments of doubt, wondering if you made the right choice, just go down to the music shop and buy something expensive.

Charley Ski

At what age did you drop out of school cause you obviously didnt get a full educatin the way you write.

Too funny, the way you wrote that I wouldve thought a teenager wrote that.

Im glad your life has been so good in music, most people arent that lucky to actually make a real career out of it. Good for you please post up some music so we can all bask in your musical glory.

I still say keep the job and benefits. With that much time in, dont you need the extra years to get your full retirement benefits? And as Ive mentioned HEALTH INSURANCE! At our ages that can become huge at any time.

Once again, I think you can do both.

But Im right on the line of doing 10 more years in the trade and retire or 10 more years of music then retire. I have a 2 pensions and a 401k and I buy and sell silver.
Like I said Im right on the edge.

Again, I don't understand why you can't do both. Regardless, don't let the music job get away. Don't let the music job get away...Don't let the music job get away. Can you hear me now?

bwahahaha.. Ive already spent 7 years on the road. I was just wondering if anyone has gone through the same thoughts. Ive made my money early. I do have to say one thing though. I bent the man over he didnt bend me over. Im even in the gym 5 days a week so when Im on stage. I feel up to it. The day job I can go back to any time. I know how to feed a retirement even in the music business. So please understand. Its not about the money. Its about being middle aged and looking for a change.

Oh, let me add to the subject as well.
I just quit a good paying job because it interfered with my family time and my music.
God bless my understanding wife; she was just glad I did not have a psychotic episode.

Celtic ramblings..

Ya know, I went back through the thread & re-read the original post.
Ad it reminds me of a place I was at a couple years ago.
I was considering a smallish Celtic-oriented group out of CO that really needed someone to fill a recent vacancy, and it was certainly a touring band.

I did some day-dreaming but ultimately came to realize that being a road warrior is not for me: nor my family.

But while that may be my decision, I also realize that there's perhaps precious few who get to do what they love vocationally.

I'm a web programmer, but my standard line is "yeah, it pays the mortgage"
and it does just that. Plus pay for the toys to make music etc.

I've day dreamed about making instruments, being a touring musician, a forest ranger, a motorcycle repair shop, realtor, even a sole-proprietor / computer consultant(the most likely to succeed).

I suppose if I really felt driven to spend the majority of my time touring in a band, maybe I'd re-structure my living situation..maybe a much cheaper rent/trailer vs a house: course, while my wife is very supportive, I'm sure there's a line...:)

But I come at this from a slightly different angle..perhaps.
that being the angle that says my life in the scriptural sense "is not my own".
I do NOT want this to morph into another religious thread, but in the realm of "what to do with my life", I so cannot discount nor ignore the reality that for me, this is a stopping off place/rehearsal for the much greater drama to unfold: and as such I personally have to at least try & take these things into consideration when doing things like forming bands, moving , etc.

In fact, right now I'm wrestling with the formation of a band: considering if it's goal(s) are furthering my mission, or taking away from the mission.

Ok, why exactly am I spilling all this out anyway?!
Someone stop me....

Summary: maybe theres a personal question to be answered:
"what's my mission?"

I dunno..

A deep introspective question, I shall ponder on this some myself.
Thanks Rich! I needed that little nudge back into the light this morning.

Celtic,

Im not the most religious person on here. But I do consider myself spiritual. All I can say is pray for guidance and something will show you the way. In my life, Ive tryed to do right and when I get to crossroads there always seems to be some sort of guide to get me to the next stage.

Im sure we just opened a whole can of worms.

I think its fantastic to chase dreams as long as you dont let the dreams take over to where you cant take care of your responsibilitys.

I agree John. Nothing at all wrong with trying to walk on water.
Just stay in the shallow end of the pool.
