I too am (as You stated) 40+ and am a drummer, however starved for attention becasue of someomone's qualities? I ask You this ...Niel Pert ... is He starved for attention? what of Sonny Bozzio? these ar just 2 of the many drummers I have seen and met and yet when they play they can do what is required of them musically and back ANYBODY .... the string started off about the atitutudes ... now as Me for a drummer it is hard to play behind someone that does not stick to the song and tries to (blow the roof off" and throws everyone off. I have seen 1st hand and delt with that crap (and probaly will continue ) as long as I remain in the bussiness... now before You start spouting off I ask You ...

1). what is Your experience?
2). how long have You been playing professionally?
3). how often have You toured?
4). how many studio's have You been in?

reason I ask is while most of Us in the "over-the-hill-gang-" (as You might like to put it) HAVE paid OUR dues, have the experience,have played professionally,have done studio work, have been on the road,
I myself was a studio drummer for WB in Branson,I sit behind the guys and back them on stage, why? ever go to a show and see a set of drums up front? why not?

in closing ... when You finally dry off those ears and get some expierence then perhaps ppl shall start taking You seriously.

Thanks for picking up on the sarcasm, I'm sure you're a PhD... Yes, if you, as a drummer, are jealous of the frontman because he's the one 'getting all the attention' then I'd say you're starved for attention. That seems pretty obvious to me or why would you care. Just sit behind your kit and do your job. And I don't understand how being a good enough drummer to back anybody (Neil Pert, Sonny Bozzio) has anything to do with aggression (what we were talking about). The string did start off about attitudes - between the drummer and vocalist (any other band member could throw things off as well). Now to answer your questions:

1. 10 years
2. What constitutes a 'professional' career?
3. Not very often
4. Quite a few

Regarding all your experience, good for you! What difference do you think that makes to me? I don't know why the drum kit isn't in front... you're the professional, you tell me! I do have some experience, 10 years, you could have learned that through my profile. And I don't care if anybody takes me seriously because either way it doesn't make a difference. It's your problem that you felt so offended by my words (and they're just words) that you had to confront me. You know the old aphorism about sticks and stones? If I dry my ears will you turn up your hearing aide? And nothing's gone to my head - what you are reading is my natural reaction to stupidity. If you're such a success then why doesn't anybody know who you are? What's more, if you're such a success then why do you have a profile on this website?

I also find it hard to relate with that one!! I've been in a few bands and have had much luck with many drummers!! Although, I am a "people" person, and any band I've been in has been alot like a family to me!! Only one time did it not work out with a drummer and I, and it was because we ended up getting involved with each other ! It wasn't a problem for us.... but it was for the other members in the band....So..........

I went my way band wise & he did his thing and we continued our relationship for a few years, until, he came out to watch my band! He couldn't handle me up in front....lets put it that way! Any way, I would have to say I disagree on your theory..... I do believe that it takes the right mix of people to have a Fun & successful band!!

How better Said? Theres about 20 of us crazy musicians or more when the time permits its self. Benefit, Bash, etc. And we all get together. Even your enemies are friends if their a musician. And I've got all....summer! Great Post. Finally a singer who has done it, And been there. Rock on...

LOL!! Yup - married and 2 kids ! I have a 16 yr. old daughter and a 15 yr. old son.....who by the way is an EXCELLENT drummer!!!

i know where everyones coming from but its not the same in every band because im a vocalist and seem 2 be the main attraction and ive noticed that my drummer wants some attention so i tell everyone to go to him cos im a 'people' person and make friends easy so i think of it as a good gesture to give my drummer the praise he deserves.

also im not like what most people have posted about vocalists bein arrogant and the centre of attention im really nervous b4 performing and im kinda shy in personal time,prefer to avoid big crowds but wen i get 2 performing im one of the big personalities ever jumping around etc..

VTI -- No Doubt!! I'm constantly interacting with all the members in the band.... Even though the singer is the "Front" person, and it usually seems they get all the attention, A good singer, no.... a great singer is nothing without a good/great band!!

always made sure everyone had pretty much equal attention!! There's no "I" in band, or in team!!

I've worked with some gifted vocalists, but the hardest "kind" to take are the Divas. You know the type...good voice but bloated arrogance and a feeling of entitlement to things the other band members are not. The basic formula that I use for situations like this is that, if the arrogance exceeds the talent, then I don't bother. It's simply not worth it.

Did you take lessons to play keys like that or are you self taught?

I took some piano lessons when I was younger.....not really good at it though..... I find it hard to play two seperate things with my hands...I do it in slow motion or something! Same with singing and playing an instrument.....everyone that does it makes it look so easy, but I don't find it to be so easy!!
I also taught myself how to play bass, (playing the Baritone in HS helped with that)......Could play pretty good, but when it came to playing & singing at the same time.... slow motion !!

But yet, I can play the drums with no problem, and I have to keep seperate beats going sometimes.......

So what's up with that HMMMMMmmmmmm.......

Thanks for your kind words, LadyRocker. The story of what led me to be self taught is actually a little amusing. At 8 years old my mom found this gee-whiz teacher for me, two weeks into lessons he decided to start hitting me with a yardstick if my wrist position was unacceptable! Well I said to hell with that and told my mom I was never having a teacher again. So, my great aunt used her library card to check out stacks of vinyl records of my favorite pieces, and I listened to those to teach myself. I learned the theory, and how to write manuscripts, much later.

The way you describe learning piano is echoed by a lot of people I know...it never worked for me though because my brain never conceived of separate parts (left hand right hand) but a synthesis of the two. Oh well, to each his own and whatever works, aye?

I'm a drummer of some 35 years, And I must say that I do have conflicts with the lead singer in our band. Maybe because she is my wife, NOT SHURE!

I've found myself just naturally not liking drummers. It doesn't seem like ego to me, just the opposite ends of the music, or something like that, right? If the drummer messes up the beat... or the vocalist messes up the melody... the whole thing is ruined! I think guitarists can make up their mistakes easier and drummers and vocalists naturally pressure themselves and each other. Nobody likes that pressure... or to mind his business and let him work it out himself, huh? Just opposites in the wrong places.

Hey folks, Just a little suggestion, A band is not unlike a machine. There aren't any parts of a machine with an ego, or an attitude toward the other parts, They just simply work together to make it all work as a whole. It's really simple, Every member needs to use their instrument to complement each player, Now you have music. But then I'm just a drummer, Who without guitar players wouldn't have a job. Just be a team.
