You're in fckin Michigan; whaddya expect?

Sometimes I think it's a cultural thing (or an anti-cultural one).

It does seem to be true that very few ppl are open-minded enough to listen to new stuff, let alone seek it out. The ones that do often seem to be looking for the very antithesis of music as many of us know it, cuz they're bored with the same old, while the rest seem to hang onto the cliche music to the point that it's a sickness.

I dunno the answer, myself. I always put originals in my sets & hope for the best, & it usually works. For the rest, there's little I play that's less than 20 years old. Sometimes when I do solo, all I do is originals, & that usually works, too, but I've never tried that in a band situation, due to the usual audience's apathy. I also try to do songs that other bands seem to forget about. At least that keeps things a little interesting for me.

There's tons of great music out there. Labels don't want to promote it, a lot of people don't know it exists, but for those fans who do want MORE than what american idol and clear channel radio are willing to deliver, there's a stockpile of regional and national bands doing fantastic stuff.

I recently got turned onto a band called "porcupine tree"... fantastic stuff (for my tastes). I'm still getting familiar with them, but I just wanted to point out that the music is out there, it's just not part of the mainstream scene.

Kramer I auditioned for a prog rock band last year and they were big into porcupine tree. Not really my taste, I worked up a couple of their songs cant even remember the names, just that one was in 7/8 time and one was in 13/4. Different stuff for sure.

To answer the post some form of classic rock, disco or country is what most club audiences will pay a cover charge to get in and see.

Its funny my son has decided the past few monthes to sing in a band. So far he has a drummer. Its very hard for me to sit back and listen to what they are doing, but on the other hand sometimes situations like this where there isnt a full group or maybe the players arent up to what I consider standards, this may be where real creativity comes into play and makes some neat new music.

Im a classic rock cover player and proud of it. My band gets gigs and gets paid to play. On the side we have started writting originals. I have about 10 in the can right now. So maybe playing in a cover band could improve your chops and maybe influence you to write your own music.

I dont know the point of your thread. I think there are players everywhere, you just have to dig and find them. craigslist, local music stores all have bulletin boards. Find venues that have music that is like what you want to play. I dont think sitting around the computor screen waiting for the world to part is going to get you anywhere. Get out there and just do it!
