I've been told that someone is interested in using my voice for a demo. Well, that's great; however, I'm a total newb to this and have NO clue what to expect or what is expected. Any advice concerning what I should be prepared for, normal costs/payments and what pitfalls to avoid would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thx so much,
CD

Not sure if this helps, but when I get my studio finished, I have lots of musician friends and if someone wants to record and needs musicians, I am going to tell them I can get people for them and it will cost $25 per hour per person. Same will go for singers. Good luck.

Ahhh, at this point this is all of the detail I have other than I am not local to the person wanting to use my voice for a demo. What type of details are you needing? I'm new enough to this I literally have NO idea what is involved period.

Thx much though,

Is it a huge, professional recording studio?
Is it a recording studio in a friend's basement?
Have they been around for 2 years or 20 years?
Is the band a well-known touring band, or a local band . . .
. . .
Details, details, otherwise, it's like saying "I have a bottle of wine. If I drink it, will I like it?"
. . .
So, what do you think? Is there maybe more than one or 2 varieties of wine, or do they all taste the same?

Seems a little misleading to me. Just what is the project? As far as cost to you, it should be none. Maybe gas to get there and back......
Good luck....That should even be payed to you.....Be careful, there's many sharks in these waters....Nothing is FREE...........

details, meaning:

Where are you located, where is the studio?
What exactly is the offer that was presented?
What expectations have been laid out for you?
Is he/they asking for ANY up-front money to cover their costs?

Is this 'opportunity' something that was solicited to you on youtube or myspace? From a company called "quickstar" or other company, that this guy represents?

Any other relevant info?

You admittedly are new to everything, and frankly, a HUGE target for scam-artists. Answering these questions would give me (and other's here) a good idea of what you are looking and if it is legit, we would be better equipped on telling you how to proceed.

Welcome to the forums, you will find that most people here are honest and helpful. Watch out for 'offers' from anyone with less than 10 posts especially.

WOW! Ok, I now realize I'm NOT just new, I'm completely green here and had no clue what I am/could potentially get into. LOL

The post looking for a female vocalist was originally posted on this forum actually by riggator. He provided his email. I responded. He said he was interested but was finalizing the music and the original post (which is now gone) stated was serious paying offer.

He shows up as being located in Louisiana. I'm in Iowa.

That's all I have atm.

AND most of all BLESS you all for the help! Obviously I'm in desperate need of all I can get since I didn't even think of those questions. [sigh]

Guess I'll just wait and see what is offered/requested at a later date and I'll be sure to ask for opinions here before finalizing anything.

AGAIN ... THANK YOU all!!!

I think I remember that post...

Can't really say for now what you are getting into, but when you get more info, DEFINITELY post it here, and we will be glad to translate it and offer you some advice.

Clicked on Riggators name on an older post and then clicked on "see all of Riggator's posts" and didn't see any asking for female singers. Maybe he didn't post that originally but replied and asked for female singer in his reply.

Thank YOU for checking. I'm sure he was the original poster and there was another gal from her that responded as well. But from one day to the next, it disappeared. It was gone right after I received the note saying he was interested.

I'm always one to assume everything's fine until I know different and I surely don't have a reason to doubt rig, BUT having said that ... it's always so GOOD to know what to watch out for as you're moving along. The info y'all have given me is truly appreciated. I KNOW I won't be making a move without asking for opinions.

What a gift you all are!!!
Thx again,

BM regularly goes through & erases many posts containing contact info out of their realm, so I'm not surprized that it can't be found. I don't really blame them for doing this, either.

However, since you're in contact with him - you need to know what format recording he's using - you need to get a copy of the song, lyric & melody - you need to find out how much it will cost you to record it in his preferred format, & make sure that you'll be reimbursed for your expense, at the very least.

If this is a "friendly" relationship putting together a rough demo, then you prolly won't be getting paid other than your expenses, but you need to make sure that your input is credited to you, & that, if it is to be sold, you will get paid for your work singing, as well as any other creative input you've put into the project.

O/l collaborations could be a lot of fun, but they're also work, & you need to explain that your services aren't free, unless it's just a favor for a friend that they won't be getting paid for in any way.

Prolly no need to be like super-paranoid about this or anything, but it doesn't hurt to CYA.

God luck with it.
