I started playing a lot more bass than guitar about 2 years ago and actually enjoy playing bass more now. I dont really feel neglected in too many ways and its difficult explaining where we are neglected, abused, and made to carry on when no one else in the band cares if the timimg is right as it should be. I guess that came from being without a drummer for so long. Since I found a good drummer I dont feel as neglected, except by those who make me load my own amps !

the Bass & Drums are like the front line in a football game; they make everything go the way it is suppoed to and make 1 or 2 on the team look great that would never make off go without them!

Definitely the singer and guitarist get most of the attention. But that also depends upon their personalities. You can have very animated bassists and drummers who grab the attention (Tommy Lee).

Most drummers, myself included, are hidden behind a wall of cymbals and drums in the corner shadows. So we're the red-headed step-children who are heard and not seen.

I think it also depends on who's paying attention. The girls... well we know who they love. It's the other musicians who will take notice of a tight rhythm section.

I like Hayden's football reference in that the bassist and drummer ARE like the front line of a football team, while the singer and guitarist are the quarterback and reciever. Who gets all the attention in a football game?

I saw Styx recently and their keyboardist was one of the most animated entertaining musicians that I've ever seen. He had his whole keyboard set-up on a rotating platform where he could spin it around, and he had a flight of stairs (stage prop) behind him where he would run up and down and run to the top and sing from 20 feet in the air. Definitely he was the center of attention on some of their songs.

 To me it's the bass player because as has already been said, they tend to lay low, stay in the back ground. Yet in general I don't think it's about the respect another gives us. I think it's aobut the respect we give ourselves. I believe audience's can not only see, but also sense when and individual or band respects themselves or not. With a band it's team work, and people can see if the band is together in attitude as well as harmony or not. If the drummer is angry at the lead singer, it can be felt when the band performs, though it may or maynot be heard in the music. Ok that's my twelve cents.
