Tracy, it sounds like you know what you're doing. And, it kinda-sorta sounds like the teacher is a little bit of a jerk . . .
There are all kinds of people in this world, and some of them are teachers. :) Uhhh . . . yeah; well, anyway, you know what I mean. :)
.
But, a self-important teacher (who won't listen to a student) can be more of a hinderence than anything.
I don't know if she was 'wearing blinders,' or not; but those people who say a thing can not be done any other way than their way, are often surpassed by people of more ability and/or vision.
Anyway - good luck.

I am sorry that she won't compromise. Some people are stubborn just like that.

Thank you for the link, I will definitely check it out!

Best of Luck!!

Jacquee, you WON'T be disappointed in Brett's program, it's amazing! :-) And any other singers that want to improve their singing ability, check it out. It's singingsuccess.com.

Now I've got to find a way to get performing opportunities so I can get out of my big case of nerves! LOL There use to be a Karaoke club not far from my house that I use to sing at, but it closed down. :-(

Just wish I could get my band together. Anyone in the SLC/Provo area that reads this interested in getting together?

Rock on!

Tracy

Hey Tracy!

I hear you. The only way to overcome a fear is to face it!! A few people on here have suggested open mic nights. I have had a hard time finding them in my area simply because I have not been in the music arena for a long time. My sister actually came to me recently with a play not far from me that has open mic nights every Thursday.

And even more exciting, there is a bar that has a house band and on certain nights, once a month or whatever, you can put a request in and sing "karaoke" with the band. Apparently this is something that they have had great success with and other bars are catching on.

What I am trying to say is that Karaoke while I personally feel is helpful in the performance and anxiety arena is not your only avenue of approach. Check out some local pubs websites, or myspace pages and see what you can uncover, you may be surprised!

Hey Jacquee, well my performance opportunities may be over soon. I got a call from a guy on here that lives in Ogden. He and I are going to get together on Friday and see how it goes. He plays guitar and has his own recording studio. If we like each other this will be a start of my first band! I'm excited as heck!! :-)

Wish me luck everyone! :-)

Let me pitch in... This industry IS geared for younger... but if you're any good and you love what you do, you'll find an audience. And yes you'll struggle with venues, talent buyers, press, and other industry people... but you'll do it and you'll be fine, because if you've got an audience you'll have a reason to make it work.

I quit for a while, due to family responsibilities (having to make a real living) and from the fleeting feeling that I had passed the age of being able to "make it". I never realized what I walked away from. Never had a national deal but played great venues, traveled well, opened for top acts... I was too obsessed with moving up from the c list.

I've got an audience again. And this time I respect it. It could be gone tomorrow, but I've learned. So don't let a day go by where doubt about your age or the time you've missed makes you wait. I wrote a jam song called Rigamaroll where I pronounce... "If you've got you can flaunt it"... I hope you find your audience. Be well.

I've been told by people with connections in the music biz that they won't even consider you if you're past age 28. However, it's never too late and there's no need to rely on a commercial conglomerate to live out your dreams. As stated above, if your music is good, you'll find an audience. You may not make millions, but that's not what it's all about.

If you can get your head out of the pop-music next youth phenomenon thing, there are all sorts of venues in which you can flourish. I have found two of them to be the small hall/concert and festival (arts festivals) circuit. They can be very rewarding both musically and financially (CD sales, t-shirt etc) if you go into them with some perseverance and intent. Also, there is the House concert venue, which is really exploding in popularity.

I've noticed on this forum that the musicians tend to limit their performance vision to the old paradigm of the "winding up at Madison Square Garden" thing, or being magically picked up by a large record company. Times have changed dramatically, and I think for the good, because there are so many options open to us who are either too old for the youth market, or too different for the pop market in general.

Come on, explore!

Hey all, All I really wanted to do was to get a cover band together and do local gigs. That's all, at least at first. If I got in with musicians that could write their own material, all the better. Then we can see what happens next. I just didn't want to look back 10 years from now and say to myself, well I never reached my musical goals cause I didn't try hard enough, you know?

About the band I was going to be in, well the guitarist decided to go with another band that was already formed and now I'm by myself again. Such is life, I guess. :-(

Start your oun band, Get yourself a PA. system, Stage Lights, etc. Through time I have got everything except lead guitar, & amp. My brother plays guitar so I always have at least one lead player. I sing & play Bass, So drummer is all we need. We even have our own full set of drums. Do it yourself, Start your own band. I know music equipment cost, Good equipment anyway. Just buy a piece at a time if you have to. The Best Of Luck, Just dont give UP! You will get there.

I couldn't disagree more on the buy your own stuff plan. Outside of your mic, rent rent rent! That way you're not out a load of cash, the equipment comes and goes per job with others to haul it around, set it up and tear it down. If you use the same PA and lights people, you can forge a good working relationship with them and they won't let you down.

To be honest, I do it for the LOVE of the game [Music]. And the fun I have doing it. I will more than likely never break even, On the amount of $ I've spent on music equipment. When you buy something new, As soon as you walk out the door with it [Guitar, etc.] Your lucky if you can ever get just half of your money back out of it. No better way to socialize than playing music at a party! or club. I love it! Need more of it!
