Many years ago, some friends with a country band called and said they had a friend with a bar in Eureka Springs, AR. that was mostly country but he wanted to try a rock band and they had told him about us, Rat Sass. We went and did the gig and he loved our classic rock but said he had a few people that liked to 3-step and wondered if we could learn 2 or 3 country tunes for the next time. I asked him if we could do 'em our way and he said yeah as long as the people could dance to it. So I rewrote the lyrics to 3 of the top country tunes at that time. Amarillo by Morning became Armadillos in Mourning, Boot Scoot Boogie became (for dog owners) Poop Scoop Boogie, and Friends in Low Places became Friends With Sad Faces. When we played 'em at the next gig there, most of the people smiled and laughed but the owners said a few got mad at us for making fun of country music, but he didn't care. Later that place sold and went back to straight country so we didn't play those songs anymore. Years later we played a biker bash in Oklahoma and at the end of the night, everyone still in the party mode retired to the beer tent to sit around and drink and bull s**t with the guys that worked there. Turned out that all the guys that worked there played acoustic guitar and went and got their guitars and entertained us for a while. Well, they took a break to drink and joke with us so asked one of the guys if I could play his guitar. He handed it to me but said, "You can't play this guitar. It only knows country music." I said, "Oh, I can play some country." which brought another round of laughs 'cause they all knew me as Mr. Rock n Roll. Well I started the chords to Amarillo By Morning and whistled the fiddle intro and got their attention. When I started singing the first line, "Armadillos in mourning, their dad lies dead in the road. The truck came without warning, It was carrying a heavy load.", they all started laughing so hard I had to stop and laugh with them. It was one of those, laughing so hard you can't get your breath things. They asked if I actually had lyrics to the whole song and I told 'em I did, and they got me to do the whole thing, with breaks every so often for laughing. When I was done they told me I had to add that to our songlist and it's been there ever since. I finally did it on a Yamaha 8 track cassette recorder I had with me and a drum machine doing all the parts. Just for s**ts and giggles, I put it on my myspace. Ya'll can check it out at www.myspace.com/jeffcoleysband if ya want. Not the greatest recording but it gets the point across.

Thanks, Neanderpaul. Looking back at some of my posts, I notice I get a little long-winded when I talk about music. Need to keep it shorter...
By the way, let me tell you about my operation.

Good story just the same....Oh yeah, and I know where you live...LOL, no, not in a creepy way! I moved from Fayetteville a little ways from you 4 years ago. Lived there almost 6 years. I love the Ozarks. Eureka is a great little town! I've never been to Ozark the town-but I saw signs for it plenty. My wife and I miss that area very much! You are lucky to be in such a wonderful part of the country.

Yeah, I love living here, but the music scene sux if you're looking to make a living at it. I moved here in 84 and clubs in Ozark and Fort Smith were paying $500 to $600 a night. Now, 25 years later, you're lucky to get half that. But there are plenty of great musicians in the area. Did you play in any bands in Fayettenam?

heheheh...the 'nam LOL I always thought that was funny-being a yankee too...nobody could ever tell me why that nickname was in use.

No on working bands there. A couple of projects that never managed to get off the ground. Saw plenty of good music on Dickson street though...my friends tell me that alot of that has been yuppified though, even since I left...The Cates and Steve Prior were always great to see down there though...Saw Junior Brown come through twice...Rev. Horton Heat...plenty of good smaller local bands too.

Bet it would be hard too-I know alot of guys in that area end up having to go as far as Branson to get work regular.

Great area though...just needs a little revival! Not the religous kind either...might get too much of that!

Holy crap, I haven't heard that in twenty years. I pulled it out of the archives and I'm listening to it as I write. Good one!

Z- he can't ever be ROFL funny, cuz he's a christian comedian/singer/songwriter, & they aren't known for being very edgy, are they? I have friends who try to convert me that send me stuff like that all the time in hopes I'll check out other stuff & get involved, as it were. Sometimes it irritates the living hell outta me, but mostly I take it as it's meant to be taken - with a kind of love.

I wrote that sentence wrong, Philby. Sorry. What I meant to say is that it's hilarious; that part of his routine where he sings - " but it's not"
hehe. (I dont want to give it away for those who havent checked it out yet.) I didnt know he was a religious comedian.. He's good.
