This one is a little tricky. I'm not really thinking in the realm of personal preference. It may be something that you didn't even listen to, but you can't deny the strength, consistency and/or commercial success of the album.

My choices (and opinions):

Hysteria-Def Leppard. How many bands follow up their biggest album with a BIGGER one. If my memory serves, 8 of 12 songs were singles and, to varying degrees, hits.

INXS-Kick. INXS was a popular band, with a few hits. Kick put them on top. Consistently strong material throughout the album.

The Black Album-Metallica. Mainstream Metal? Although it alienated some hardcore fans, the album solidified them as one of the few definitive metal bands.

Appetite for Destruction-Guns 'N' Roses. Graphic, disturbing ooze flowed from every note on this set (okay, now I'm getting carried away) and changed the landscape of music forever.

For the record, I'm not a big GNR or Metallica fan. Just to give you an idea of what I'm talking about.

That is a hard one Joseph. I have been listening to rock music for better than 30 years. Damn near 40.
I never have been a big collector of albums.
Lead Zepplins Physical Graphiti album comes to mind.
Frampton Comes Alive.
Queen A night At The Opera
My "teen" years were comercially dominated by the hated disco music.
I lost many good rock friends to that sludge, I avoided any contact with the Disco ducks, with the exception of a few trips to the Dance/Bars to pick up chicks. The older "rock generation" women were a hell of a lot more fun.

The White Album - Beatles (the beginning of the end)

Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - Beatles (had the Stones logo on the cover)

Their Satanic Majesty's Request - Stones (had the Beatles' pics on the cover)

The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway - Genesis

Peter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel (his collection of self-titled LP's was interesting yet confusing when it came to determining which was which)

Hoist - Phish (their 1st semi-pop CD was good from start to finish)

Nugget - Cake (one of the more unusual bands to get air play, & it started here)

Abraxas - Santana

Dark Horse - George Harrison (clearly showing the loss of his voice, which was possibly the harbinger of his throat cancer?)

Thanks Paul, and that was just 1987. That was a good year, I got my first degree and non-factory job that year. I also recorded my first CD that summer.

Howlin: that first QMS album was awesome, especially the song "Gold and Silver". Was that the same Ian Underwood from FZ fame on the "The Planets"? I definitely got to hear that.

Jimmy, what? ... no Mission UK (carved in sand), Love and Rockets (earth sun moon), XTC (skylarking), the Church.
I'm not sure if they were 87 though.

I still have the Sisters of Mercy, Gene Loves Jezebel, P. Furs and will add:
Dokken - Back for the Attack
Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind and Powerslave
Marillion - Childhood's End
Rhythm Corps - Common Ground
Circle Jerks - IV
Bon Jovi - New Jersey
the Dead Milkmen - Beelzebubba
Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime
Fates Warning - Parallels

THe other one I was going to mention was Bon Jovi-Slippery When Wet...(which came out in '86). Wow. There were two GOOD years for rock albums.

I was wrong... only Love and Rockets' "earth sun moon" was released in 1987.
XTC's "skylarking" was 1986,
and The Mission UK's "carved in sand" wasn't until 1990.
