Hey Everyone!

I am new to these forums. I started getting involved with music quite late. I recently read an article which discouraged me a lot: http://www.toddh.net/music/adult_musicians.html

However, I am still determined to improve and become a better musician. Are any of you teen or adult late starters who have encouraging stories about succeeding as a band? Or at least improving as an overall musician?

Just so you know, I did find a site that shows promise for being an encouraging source for late starters: www.latestartermusician.com
They have a forum called LSM Rock Bands.

I would love to hear your thoughts on the "discouraging" article above. And if you have any tips on becoming a better band player or musician, please let me know.

Dont woory about peoples opinions, because thats what they are. Im sure there are alot of people outhere that started late. If you want it get it dont let some edjucated suffed shirt opinion stop you.

A lot of things in this article are true. But reguardless of your age, you either have an ear for music or you don't. Those with an ear can teach themselves. Playing with others is the best way to improve fast. Sure you have to do your homework, but you can only take yourself so far. Jamming with others reinforces things you've learned on your own and opens your eyes to things you may have never even considered. Play music for your own enjoyment. F--- what others may think of your chops. I've played with guys who have studied music until they were blue in the face and still had no idea how to mesh with others. Sure, they could school you on all kinds of theory, but were lost when it came to simple improvisation. Good luck to you and let the music do the talking!

I played a little back when , yerly 20's.
don't know why i quit, my life got in the way i guise.
now at 51 i'm been playing for about 2 years and love it.
I try to practice when ever i can.
still looking for others to jam with,part of the reason i,m on this.
My point is it's never to late to enjoy playing music.

Im not going to waste time reading an article discouraging you from playing music.

I will simple say welcome to bandmix, hopefully you will get some useful knowledge from this site. If you are starting thinking you are going to set the world on fire with your music. Your probably wrong. Music is a dime a dozen, and I include myself in that.

If you want to play music you need to set up some sort of structured practice routine that you can live with and keep at it. Music takes a lot of time, but Ive found in my life that we all make time for the things that are important to us. Ive spent a lifetime playing music. Im constantly trying to improve and be the best I can be.

Good Luck and dont get discouraged when someone slams you on here, cause they will when you least expect it.

I started music at age 11 and it has been the main reason for my existence here on the planet earth ever since. I am now 50 and still have the same desire to be the best I can be at all levels and the requirements of music (musician, band leader, guitar player, vocalist, song writer, performer, entertainer, soundman, and guitar tech) you can never learn enough and should always have an open mind.
I disagree with most of what the author of that first article says, being a musician is no different than anything else in life you get out of it exactly what you put into it. Being a musician is not easy and no matter how talented you are it takes a lot of hard work, tenacity and most of all a lot of your time (time is the secret) there are no short cuts, no easy way out you will either put the time into it or you won't, I was reading an article in Guitar Player Mag. recently on Eric Johnson He was using the term trying he is always trying to do this or that. He used this term so much that the interveiwer called him on it, and his answer was that he really does try hard to maintain his level of virtuosity.
So if you have that burning desire to play music at any age you will have to try as hard as you can just as 110% of all the musicians that have come before you have had to do. If you have the desire the tenacity and the heart of a champion there is no doubt in my mind you will succeed good luck to you.

I LOATHE and DESPISE the 'naysayers' of the world that seem to believe that nobody can find any happiness or even a crack of success in music after 25/30/35 whatever...

In my old band, I wanted to do more than play the same crappy dive over and over, decided to set my sights on the A-clubs, the bass player told me "you are too old, you will never make anything of yourself, and you have no chance of playing anywhere else than a local corner bar, ever."

Geez, I was 38 when that was said to me. I thought about it, and damn if I'm going to let that crap get in my way. I may not ever be famous, but I'm certainly reaching my musical goals and a pretty damn happy individual... until someone tries to tell me "you can't do it"... then I get ugly

Yeah, but he wanted to play the SAME dive only, once every other week, to the same 20 people. Oh, and they didn't pay us, except for free drinks. Great if you are an alcoholic I guess

LOL I remember a place like this. (People pay in one way or another..)

Long story short, we would get FUCT up in this dump and blast it so hard the windows would shake. (we laughed like crazy)

Then there was the "sh*t talking" over the pa..

They called it quits when we publicly announced "we were playing for drinks, and not the watered down ones you apes are drinking.."

They did the smart thing, they let us play for the rest of the night and left a phone message saying we were banned permanently for bad behavior(s).
