Phil,
Here's a snapshot of the stairwell.
notice the way the framing is doglegged to accommodate a bend in the run.
That's to provide headroom to avoid tall people from whackin' their heads on that big timber beam on the left.
The staircase is wider then appears in this photo. (the half round window at the upper landing is a five footer)
I appreciate your advice to take care in the construction of the stairs. Shredd6 previously reminded me of the complexities of stair building. (He's a professional stair builder, as well as a solid guitar player.)
I only ever built one other stair case. That is the one in my first house (the one I've been living in most of my life) It is a straight run stairs and didn't give me too much trouble.
I anticipate incorporating a landing in the new stairs at the bend, in the same manner that you would build an L shaped stairs.
Your carpenter friend sounds like the kind of guy I'd like to sit down with and yak over a couple of beers. I'd love to see some pitchers of his work.
For the record, I never worked in the building trades myself. Made most of my income was in the metal field over the years. I build my own homes because I cant afford to buy them. Designing them is also a great creative release as well, (almost as much as writin' and singin' songs.

Kramerguy,
