George,
Here is the skunk cabbage spath I was tellin' ya about that I found on Saturday. The little bugger is burnnin' its way right up through the ice! They produce a substantial amount of bio chemical heat. I've read that you can make flower to bake bread out of skunk cabbage. I'm not sure that I would want to bother if the bread would smell anything like the cabbage. (they really do smell like skunks)

If I remember right, you have a beautiful place started.

Robin,
Thanks for the compliment.
Still peckin' away at it, but work has been slow mostly due to the weather.
(Plus I've been a bit lazy lately)
Finally completed the custom bay windows, however, and am about to start construction on the staircase and masonry wood heater.

Lookin' good, HJ!

Staircases are a booger to build, if you don't have experience. Good luck with them. Is it a straight one, or does it have to curve around a corner or be circular? I've done quite a few in my time, but not the circular ones, except from kits. I have a friend for that who's totally amazing. He even steams & curves the railing from a single piece of wood, if it's called for. Most amazing builder guy I ever met! He built a few circulars out of logs - steps & center post were all logs. He had to carve them to make the stair treads stack on each other as they curved. That's some time-consuming stuff, there! Then he did this way cool thing with the railing that incorporated smooth, natural sticks of wood into the totally smooth steamed rail. He has to set the rail within 3 minutes once it's steamed, & runs around frantic as he sets it in place on the spindles with those huge gloves he has to handle it with. A true master of his craft. Wish you could meet him & see his house, man. It's the wildest thing I ever saw built by one guy.

Phil,
Here's a snapshot of the stairwell.
notice the way the framing is doglegged to accommodate a bend in the run.

That's to provide headroom to avoid tall people from whackin' their heads on that big timber beam on the left.
The staircase is wider then appears in this photo. (the half round window at the upper landing is a five footer)
I appreciate your advice to take care in the construction of the stairs. Shredd6 previously reminded me of the complexities of stair building. (He's a professional stair builder, as well as a solid guitar player.)

I only ever built one other stair case. That is the one in my first house (the one I've been living in most of my life) It is a straight run stairs and didn't give me too much trouble.

I anticipate incorporating a landing in the new stairs at the bend, in the same manner that you would build an L shaped stairs.

Your carpenter friend sounds like the kind of guy I'd like to sit down with and yak over a couple of beers. I'd love to see some pitchers of his work.
For the record, I never worked in the building trades myself. Made most of my income was in the metal field over the years. I build my own homes because I cant afford to buy them. Designing them is also a great creative release as well, (almost as much as writin' and singin' songs. )

Kramerguy,
Just curious, Was last weekends gigs with the girl singer?

Thanks George,

The boss thinks I should be gettin' my ass back to the new place and get some electrical wires strung and some more sheetrock hung now that it's warmed up some.
(she's probably right.)
Its been so windy lately around here, I'm askeered I might get killed by a fallin' branch if I walk in the woods in the dark. ( lame excuse, but I'll get to it this weekend, when your all are out playin' havin' fun  )

anyways, I gotta go take the dogs out to pee, so I'll bid ya'll good evenin'

later,
J

LOL

Speakin' of electric - tree fell on my power lines. Ripped out the fascia on my house. Lines laying on the ground. Then, of course, the tree fell on my wife's car. It doesn't look too good to me. Had to cut it out with a chain saw.

My truck's in the shop.

Now the electric came back on...2:40 AM...live lines laying on the ground. Can't let the dogs out. This is a huge flookin' mess!

Borrowed a friend's car so Sue can get to work tomorrow. I hafta stay & wait for ins adjusters & car towers. Dunno how long the 'lectric's gonna be on. I called & told 'em to shut it the hell off until they can get my lines up!

Of course I don't have that previously unknown little "rider" that provides me with a rental car while mine's getting fixed. I thought that was provided in "complete coverage," but I don't speak insuranceze, evidently.

My life sux.

Hope you're all well.

Peace, love & frisbee!

7:15 & it's still on. They seem driven to deliver the juice, no matter where it may go. I'm a lil pissed right now. Gotta walk 4 dogs away from the downed lines. Granted - 3 of them are lil pugs..LOL

Calling the elec co is always fun, ain't it? 5 minute waiting time, this time - better than the "over an hour" I got yesterday.

Hot wires on the ground worry the bejeezyboos outta me!

Philby,
Ain't your life that sux (I'm kinda thankful for it myself, yours and mine)

Your just going through a set of suckful circumstances , what with being plagued with suicidal deer, earaches, crushed cars and whippin' live wires.

It is Friday 13 after all!

But, to quote Stix & Floyed... " TGIF!"

things gotta get better

It has been a little discouraging, I must admit. I'm not usually one for listing my misfortunes, but I'm beginning to wonder how much more I can take.

Eh, they say god doesn't give ya nuthin ya can't handle...I'm trying to remember that.

Remember when good 'ol Shread6 was goin' through adverse times (boss givin' him sh*t, installin' stairs in the wrong house, cacksukkas stealin' his tires, etc.) .... next thing ya know, he's giggin in an awsome reggae band! :)

Always look at the bright side of life.
