Hello SP, I understand and respect you.

You really represent a large majority of the musical public and thank god for your opinions and I am not being cynical here :wink:

In My Humble Opinion from the group of us that go out and play music on a somewhat professional level that have to care about what the audience wants to hear and what the band wants to play, because I believe in the very fragile balance of being a sell out or not being a sellout and having to deal with the very obscure line between the two as a cover band artist and an original artist that depends on the income as a primary or secondary income as opposed to the artist that just do it for fun and dealing with the prejudices between the two because one has the luxury and one does not I hope you see where I'm going with this.

In my opinion the two are not mutually exclusive we are in fact of like minds we are trying as hard as we can to be the best writers and musicians we can be, I also have a very short patience for 3 chord basic songs but on the other hand we all start playing music from the basics, I mean just because we are a little more trained and thus finicky about our preferences in the intellectual level of and the inflated ego's
of our art should we deny the general listening public a wonderful love ballade. Or any song that they pay with there time or money.
I am going to ask you good people to do a little soul searching and ask yourself and be honest (this is not a contest)
How many of you have played your music be it original or covers to;
100 people
1000 people
5000 people
10,000 people
50,000 people

Do what you do best.
George toured relentlessly for years between stints in minor league baseball. Hes worked a lot harder for what he has than you give him credit for.
For every George whos made it there are millions of others who havent. Make sure the music you do is what you want to do.
Just because you dont like a successful artist is no reason to slam him. George appeals to a lot of people, a lot more than I ever will so I have to respect that for what it is.

J.W. pretty much captured my sentiments with this response a couple of posts into this mess.
There have been a few other good points brought up by some mature people with a handle on reality. Most notably, the recent comments by that 'ol straight shootin' Texan, J Haley!

I'll wrap this up with a good old song lyrical quote from another guitar wielding rocker, Dave Edmunds....
"It All comes down to - Cheap talk, patter, and jive"

cheers, :wink:

Thank you all for valuable / insightful information and opinions on a whimsical thread that really didn't deserve this much attention.
A lot of food for thought here. Brought me back down to earth.
Thanks,

Hey Sentient, I just went over the give and take between you and J-Haley about George Thorogood. I fully understand your opinion of GT based on your music. The thought of George covering one of your tunes is actually kind of humorous. Could you imagine him singing Fun At Walmart? That would be bizarre! Or likewise could you imagine yourself covering Bad To the Bone? Equally bizarre. GT is just a raw, gutty, lowdown, raspy growling bluesman. Either you like it or not. GT is a completely different style of musician. I enjoy both you and GT for very different reasons. Lyrically your music is definitely more complex. I'd still like to hear what a real band could do with your material. Anyway, interesting give and take there on old GT.

Hey everyone..

I can't believe I missed this topic until now...

GT.. well ...
I like his material. There. I said it.

Sure, it's simple. Sure, it's rehashed delta blues / old blues mixed with even more simple, and really.. who cares?

Aren't we all kind of combinations of our musical heroes? I won't drag on about it, but in the end there's a few key points I stick to:

1. There are two types of musics to me. The performers and the entertainers. Performers actually play their instruments, add style and creative process to it. Entertainers just regurgitate what other people write for them. Brittany and Spice girls are entertainers. I don't respect them except that they do work for what they get. I wholly respect ANY performers who make something of themselves, simply because they had to work really damn hard to get there, and they obviously have something that appeals to mass audiences, besides tits and ass.

2. Simplicity is the hallmark of genius. Kurt Cobain knew this, so does GT. Could probably name dozens of others who did the same.

Well it almost worked on another thread. :oops:

Good points Kramer. I like the distinction you drew between entertainers and performers. I dont know if its Websters accurate but it makes horse sense.

This is the side of the biz that made me change my philosophy about it. You can look at this business in one of two ways really;

1) Enjoy what you do and forget the money
2) Do what ya gotta do to make money and forget writing new stuff

Course, I'm choosing option 3, do both LOL. But I decided a long time ago that the money was just a nice beni of making music I love, be it originals or covers :shock:

But, that's just my not-so-humble opinion.
