MTV and Myspace, dude. It can be a real plague in the ass sometimes.

Is that where everybody goes for new music now? Instead of the radio?

That's it, Z. Radio is all but dead thanks to this new media called the "internet" - maybe you've heard of it?

There are lots of sites that offer up new music, as well as referrals to other acts that "sound like" this act or that. So ppl can easily find their preferred styles of music without having to wade through stuff that they don't like, or might have liked if they heard it.

Radio used to be a medium that would open ppl's minds to all sorts of interesting acts, before they discovered that ppl don't really want to have their minds opened. Then radio went the route of so many other things, by specializing in particular genres, & ignoring anything that didn't fit into their very narrow niche of genre choice.

Radio should die a hard death, imo, for becoming yet another Wal-Mart-like corporate-minded piece of crap medium that refuses to deliver anything but standardized, sterile, assembly-line manufactured lil shitballs of "music," & refusing to hold out & give us the great variety of musical sounds that the world at large is still producing, like it used to, once upon a time.

Is the whole world becoming like this? I think I wanna try another world for awhile, if it is.

Just a video that went international from a late nite latin talk show, from a tv station called televisa. Nothing came out of it, but its great to get gigs and jobs. Things come and go.

Ok- I dont know how I'd cypher thru all the bullshit there, i see where this is going. Classic rock stations or rap or other or university. That's the radio. The internet is full of all the other stuff. The young peops know how to select their genre. It's the wave of the future. I can deal with change. I just want to sell 1 song for a buck (I think like all of us do) and trying to sort out the ever-changing situation..
One good thing for us musicians is that in these times of economic down-turn people seek escape from their lives of turmoil at work etc and music is one of the cheapest (vs a movie- what is a ticket now, $15 or sumptin?.. and a song download is .99)
prices for entertainment these days so I think that we're in a good group..

Z,
If I got my history right, when Elvis walked into Sam Phillips' little recording studio for the first time, it wasn't with the intent of producing any product to make money. His only thought was to SPEND a few bucks to make a little record to play for his beloved Mom, kinda just for the fun of it. Sometimes ya just gotta do things for the hell of it, and if good things come out of it , cool!

Just a thought,
Howlin

That's nice. I recorded my Mom singing & playing piano on a tune I think was called "Good Old Friend of Mine" on my old tascam 8-track. Would you all like to hear it?

Actually I was in a band called U-Turn a few years ago
and we got our songs played on some local radio stations.
We even had a few interviews and got in the paper etc...
We got a manager and even got on a radio show in downtown
Manhattan,NY.
We even recorded an album and a video(we got screwed lol)
in New Jersey.
We even got signed to a european label(that folded less than
6 months later).
If you only knew how much money our manager spent
on us you would flip out.
God what I would give for that money knowing what
I know now(still not a lot lol but more than then).
Talk about being excited and actually starting to build a bubble
somewhat hehehe...but then it got popped.
We not only went about doing it all wrong(not playing out and
building a fanbase in a general region)
but the stations stopped playing
our songs and basically went all hip hop and R&B.
No one knew us outside of our little town and even then
people coming to our shows slowly stopped
coming to the shows.
The thing is do it right hehe...build a following and keep
that ball rolling and not to think for a second
that getting on the radio and even going to a cool city
to get on air is gonna make you a star.
Well for some it might if they have a really special song that
catches on...but for the most part I truly learned an
experience and that is not to think like a rock star.
Be who you are...be real and do it cause you love music
not cause you think oh I will get songs played on the radio
and people will embrace them.
We do this for ourselves but also for the people
that love music...so it makes since to just get out there
and play for the people and listen to what they have to say
as well and say what you have to say.
Lol sorry for the long story but just thought it would
be interesting to tell this story .
I think I totally agree with what others say'on here...college
radio!
I think the smartest or at least one of the smartest things
anyone could do is to hit the college scene.
Go to all the college campus's and give your cd
out, get it on their radio shows, play all party's
and get gigs around and in the college.
Then spread to other towns.

:)

I guess some students listen to their local college stations tho.. ?
That might be worth a shot.
I was thinking about trying to put down some almost (as close as I can get) to) studio quality songs and doing the cdbaby thing. I dont know if my music would sell, but I've gotten a few hits on myspace..

Dude that sounds like a great idea.
I think you should do that.
People will buy your songs, they are great songs and
anyhow I believe there is an audience for everything out there.
