Has anyone sent a CD of your original music to a radio station, gotten air-play, responses, record contracts, etc? All stories are welcome, please.
Thanx,
-Steve

I still get some airplay now and then on Dr. Demento with my big hit from the 80's "I like Ronnie's Hair". It was played a few times by Howard Stern back in his WNBC days. It's a parody about Ronald Reagan's hair.

The first song on my profile "Come On To Me" was lifted directly from vinyl off of a compilation album of regional bands , which was sponsored by eastern Pennsylvania,s big A.O.R. radio station at the time (1980) WZZO (Z95)

Hey Howlin'- I've heard your song a time or two on the air!! It just now rang a bell. Wow!
Super-Cool, Man. Do you get royalties when-ever it is played?

I've played live on public radio several times.
find one that has a show playing music in or near your genre and contact the show. They will likely either play your music, or possibly let you play live if you find a cool show host!
The last time I played live on air we brought a keg of beer w/us, and the Board Members just happened to do a tour of the station while we were there...... the poor guy lost his show; but he became my producer (Nelson Slaeghter who was produced by Lou Reed who also played in his band) and is still a good friend...

Lad one of my band's CD's played on NPR...dunno how they did it...I missed that meeting...

I've been on local Fox TV, & did a few radio commercials. Just happened to know some ppl who shoe-horned me in, & I wrote & performed the theme for a kid's tv show, locally, that was on the air for 2 years...never got any $ for it, but the exposure was nice...although it never led to much other than ppl stopping me on the street cuz they saw me do this or that thingie.

I got one song played on a Christian radio station and the rest on college stations. Still trying to replicate my dumb luck again and get something back on the stations again.

Steve,
Sad to say, I'm still waitin' for that big ASCAP check to come in.
(probably has something to do with my forgetting to pay my membership dues for the last couple of decades  )

Seriously, you need to rack up a substantial amount of airplay to start cashing in on any royalties.

anyways, I got a lot of local publicity out of that silly tune.
It was recorded with myself on vocals and organ, and the rest were studio musicians. Redrock studios is a great little studio, and they're still going strong, after three decades!

Because the song got a fair amount of airplay (some national) My wife (bass) and I put a working four piece band together named "The Philabusters" which was the name coined for the studio band.
THAT'S were the value of having a record getting a bit of airplay really paid off.

If I ever get around to fixing my broken styles on the ol' turntable, I'll put "Ronnie's Hair" up on my profile. (I still have a few 45 rpm records, and I've seen a few for sale on line)

Do the main CD buyers (my guess is age-group 15- 30-something) even listen to the radio anymore? Or do they jump on the internet to find out the latest/ newest music out there.
When I was growing up (B.I. -Before Internet  ) The radio was the only way to hear the new hot tunes . Times have changed, and maybe they all rush over to cdbaby or itunes for the new stuff?

You're right. Nobody gives a fck bout the radio unless you get bored of your own music in the car. I used to listen to a certain station for a while. Then I moved out of the area and that was it. It's not like I'm missing out on AMAZING music on the radio.

Yeah Andy, thats what I was wondering.
I guess some students listen to their local college stations tho.. ?
That might be worth a shot.
I was thinking about trying to put down some almost (as close as I can get) to) studio quality songs and doing the cdbaby thing. I dont know if my music would sell, but I've gotten a few hits on myspace..
