Alright if you click on my profile picture you can listen to my two ideas that I have uploaded they are in wma so you will find them under audio video section. I have had Reason and protools for about 2 months and these are my first ideas (notice that they are ideas being unfinished). I just want some input on the tone and direction of the music. I dont want it to sound Churchy... or poppy. Any ways I already realize that there is sh*t for percussion which im aiming to fix via recruiting a decent percussionist i can email my compressed files to or one local. Hit up all the criticizm your heart can handle and leave me some nasty comments. And maybe a good one here and there so I dont quit haha.

Okay - 1st one - it's okay. Capt Scott would be better to critique this, I think, as he's into all that spaciness. I like it, but yeah, it needs development. Don't like the over-echoed sound for the most part. Beginners always overdo the effects. Try to back them down a tad in the future. Let the instruments speak, and use the effects to set a subtle mood, rather than having the effects overpower what the instrument says.

2nd one - vox are buried in effects again. Other than that, it's too short to see where it could go. Develop it some more & I'll try again. The echoing "Edge" style guitar is okay for a short time, like one tune, but it gets old for me quickly.

You have some potential thingies here, but I'd have worked a bit more on them before I would put them out there for comments.

Enjoy

Yeah thanks a bunch man. I am gonna try and have them rythmically driven ( by percussion which sounds odd being that im not a drummer) but I havent finished them because I dont have a set or a program. Tried to dwld easy drummer prolly gonna have to buy it. Im a big fan of effects but yeah the point of where i need to diminish them becomes hard for me to tell. The vocal line was just trying out some compression and EQ and I recorded it in stereo should have been mono and outputs should have been pumped but I have no lyrics written. more or less im worried about the quality of the recorded sound. These are extremely preleminary/ no real developement ( I hear where I want it to go just obtaining the means is tough with limited budgets as everyone is aware.) That was a very nice critique though. Here in the next month I hopefully will have a couple programs to dick with and see what I can do for finishing out some stuff. The delay is a little heavy for sure. (i am trying to get away from a lead guitar driven song I want to use octaves and some simple stuff looped until I get a good drum break and some kick ass beats to fuel the mood which I hope to amp) I want to take the velocity and push it through the roof especially one the one with like the sentence of vocal action.

Not a thing I can add to Phil's critique. He was spot on as usuall.
I will lodge one small complaint though. I really hate to have to access files to hear music. It would be nice if you would do an MP3 format for your Bandmix player.

Audacity.
This is the program I use to download from my ZH4 recorder after practice.
I think it has a conversion as well.
If I find out (reads Remember) more I'll give you a shout out latter.

Depends on what kind of operating system you are working with. With Mac you have Audacity and Garage Band. With Windows you also have Audacity...I don't really know what else because I don't use anything with that platform. I use Linux and either use OggConverter, Sound Convert, or Audacity. The great thing is, is that most of these softwares are free and you just have to Google them to down load them. Pretty cool. =)

I used "Switch" on mine, but it was only a free sample for a short time. Seemed pretty user friendly, though.

Think I'll try Audacity sometime soon, when I have time to download the files. Gotta do that between 3 & 6 AM, or I use up all my lil nuggets on my satellite hookup & then they punish me badly for two days.

Alrighty well I will get one that and put the mp3 versions up. Then I just have to cross my fingers and pay off my card to load it up again with programs to finish my ideas haha

Dude I have to say 1st off your ideas are awesome!
I really like the 2nd one best. Keep going with that one for sure.
Maybe build and build until it is one wall of massive sound.
This is closer to what I like to listen to musically.
I have always been into electronic inspired rock,
whether it was Pink Floyd, Alan Parsons, or Nine Inch Nails.
There is still a lot of work to be done here though.
For one arranging is something you need to get familiar with.
No rules in arranging though I just think it helps with organizing...
so don't think for a second you have to go by the verse chorus verse chorus format.
It does help with making a song a little more accessible though.
Your mix doesn't sound bad though, it actually sounds pretty good.
My advice would be just to continue doing what you are doing
just develop a style...something that you identify with.
The 1st song sounds like a good live song that is more
for fans of the instrumental mood kind of vibe.
The 2nd one I can hear radio potential if you don't overdo it.
It is all up to you but I think you should take the 2nd song
and let it build and build and slowly change the vocals melody
and perhaps add some new beats torward the end.
I can so hear like cellos and stuff slowly come in.
Anyways keep up the great work.

I just found out I was able to get a free upgrade for protools 8 and it has some killer features that should allow me to get some more progress going. I got EZ drumer the other day and protools 8 has a score feature that actually takes the MIDI and places it on a staff and allows for easy writing. So hopefully here sometime soon I will get to finish one of them. Thanks for the Critique Fears! I will see what I can pump out
