Your mission should you decide to except for the year of 2009

To be the best musician you can be.
To practice till you meet that end.
To go out and support your local music scene.
To be humble and not put yourself on a petastal above everyone else.
To not be a hypocrite.
To be patient with your fellow musicians.
To not panic when you get on stage (they are all just people, and put
they're pants on one leg at a time just like you)
To not panic when something goes wrong with the p.a. (its probably just a matter of pulling an insert cable or any cable that is not making good contact out and re-inserting it, or just turning the compressor off and then back on)LOL.
Your main mission is to enjoy yourself and have fun because this is why you have made all the sacrifices in your life to get to where you are as a musician, however great or humble your band is because this is a real treasure in the changing fortunes of time.
THE NUMBER 1 ONE REASON YOU PLAY MUSIC IS TO MAKE SPIRITS SOAR WHETHER IT IS YOUR SPIRIT OR SOMEONE ELSES THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love the post J. I accept the challenge, you should know better n to throw down with a Texacan.

One little problem however.
I put my pants on both legs at the same time. Little trick I picked up while dressing in a hurry during cold assed camps in hunting season.

Good post. I agree in principle with most of it. Exceptions: I'll support the local music scene IF the musicians are getting PAID a reasonable wage for their efforts. Other than peeing in my pants occasionally (thank God for Depends) I never panic on stage. (Just kidding about peeing in my pants). I will be patient with my fellow musicians IF they show up ON TIME for rehearals and gigs SOBER and STAY SOBER. I'll be patient with my fellow musicians IF they put a similar effort in learning material on their own that I do. I never panic when my PA goes wrong because it never does. I set all the controls at the point where NOTHING CAN GO WRONG with it. I'll admit that I could be a very much better musician than I am. I am devoting myself to learn two hot new cover tunes and write one kick-ass original each and every month so that by the end of the year we have 36 new tunes and I will also practice parts of songs now in our repertoire that need help AND we most definitely need to start doing some serious practice on our vocal harmonies. That's probably the weakest part of the band. I DO enjoy myself when I play and for the most part everybody else enjoys it too. I wouldn't do all this if I didn't enjoy it. I hope to be able to stay healthy enough to keep playing as long as possible. When I die I might be clutching my bass guitar or fishing pole or golf disc. Those are the things I enjoy doing. Later...

fishermanbob, you are a good man,if you ever come down this way we will have to go flounder giggin, or at least jam some blues. I believe every musician should be payed WELL at least $100.00 to $200.00 a night.
Sans, sorry I'm just not that co-ordinated LOL!

j-haley, thanks. You know how HARD it is to do this music business. Loading equipment, hauling it, setting it up, running sound checks, playing for three hours, breaking equipment down, loading it, hauling it, unloading it. Then to have some tightwad tell you all he can afford is $300 for the band. Or he's got bands playing for free. Then on top of everything else we have skills that took countless hours to develop, and the equipment that we paid many hundreds or thousands of dollars for. For all you people who are playing for free I've got this advice for you: STOP GIVING IT AWAY.

Hopefully your relatives have done good things for you in the past. If so, consider it barter. If you play for people you don't know and they're paying for food and beverages at the establishment that you're playing in, then PLEASE don't play for FREE. Somebody's MAKING MONEY OFF YOU. Later...

I just plan on rockin in 09.

I dont need no stinkin list.

I dont understand the challenge, either you get off the couch and do something or you dont, its your choice.

If you want to play in 09, get out there and play. Get out there and meet fellow musicians who are actually playing, not just talking about it or writing about it on the internet. Get your feet wet in 09.

We had one of the hardest audiences Ive encountered in a long time sat night. They were the most unresponsive audience weve played too in a while. We got them up and dancing for some songs. Strange group, they wanted to hear the latest songs but they wouldnt dance to them, then we go to the old dance standbys and they danced but kept requesting the newer stuff. Truelly a weird deal for me. After the gig, everyone in the house came up and said they loved us, I wanted to say you guys have a wierd way of showing it. The bartender said we worked the crowd better than anyone she had seen in there, and they want us back for all their special partys. So I guess I was real humble in that I didnt let my attitude take over and blast some of these folks for not acting like they were having a good time. The old me would have done that, I guess age kinda takes some of the edge off. My kness and hips are sore as hell cause I was way more physical than normal, I pretty much had to lay up all sunday to recover. On the pay side we dont take on anything less than $100 a man. $200 a man is a lot of money in my neck of the woods. I dont know of many gigs locally that offer that kind of wage. I hope someone on here finds those kind of guarentees but you dont see it in the Memphis area. A lot of places still figure $50 a man, and there are still plenty of free gigs to go around if you want to do that. On the free side of things we would do a worthy benefit if one of our members believes in something. But playing for free just to play, no way!
