Anyway, do you know my good friend Cary Clouser from up your way in St. Anne's, Canada?

Cary is a multi-instrumentalist/lead vocalist/songwriter from a 'local hopeful band' - Oracle. They are an award-winning Jethro Tull cover band but are now moving towards doing Cary's originals. Their myspace is:

Well thank you so much, Howlin'!! In my opinion my very good friend and mentor Steve Nardelli of The Syn is one of the best vocalists going both right now and in the late 1960s UK freakbeat scene (when he sang with Chris Squire of Yes), and singing co-lead with him on "Reasons & Rituals" was the highlight of my musical life to date. Our voices both blended together and complimented each other really well.

And I certainly agree with your comment about the flute player. As executive producer for this track and for the ongoing V-band Project I knew that our first track had to have something really different. I had met Cary Clouser online just a few weeks before the V-band recording session at Brett Kull's (Echolyn) MM3 Studios outside of Philadelphia and thought that his was the sound that would set this recording apart. I invited him down from St. Anne's, Canada to the session and it worked out really cool as you say.

And the next 14 Hour Technicolour Dream: The V-band Project is well into the planning stage for 2009. It will take Steve's and my vision to the next level - and an album/DVD is planned on Umbrello Records when all is said and done.

I agree, Hayden, that several styles in an album is the way to go unless the artist in question is exceptionally strong in one particular style and that one style is clearly his/her musical 'voice.'

I have gotten to the point that unless an artist is one of my very favorites, and a particular CD is one of my favorites from that favorite artist, I have difficulty listening all the way through a release. I guess that since we folks of my age were limited in our abilities during the primacy of both vinyl (I otherwise love vinyl) and tape (I have always hated everything about tape) to change between songs and artists easily, the ease and quickness that one can switch between artists in our current digital age has spoiled me.

But that's o.k.

with the bands that are shoveled at us today.....well, I can only take so many tracks of an extension of the prior song!
there is no variety in the songs of the newer bands. not the one's we get to hear anyway. that's why I just cant fully go for jam bands. I kind of like em. amazing skills, but the songs are just a collection of long leads by the various instruments in most I've heard.

The only jamband I really liked at one time was the Yonder Mountain String Band. I have gotten somewhat bored with them over time. They made a name for themselves recently by performing at the Democratic National Convention.

Note: I recently signed a really fine newgrass/progressive bluegrass band to Umbrello Records. Their name is Crucial Smith and they made quite a splash at IBMA in Nashville in the late '90s/early 00's before breaking up. They will release their third studio CD on Umbrello in early 2009. Links:
