Depends on the brew for me. A Guiness should be just around 45-50 degrees for the best flavours. Most American & even Canadian beers are just too fizzy for me, although there are some pretty damned goos micro-brews. My wofe gave me the bestest Xmas present ever last year when she entered me into the "Beer of the Month Club," Which sends me a 12 pack a month. It contains 4 edifferent brews from two different local breweries somewhere in the USA.

I've always been a bit of an explorer with beer. I like many of them that most ppl wouldn't even consider "beer" by our usual standards.

I'm having a word with mine!

This simply isn't fair at all. I'm loyal to beer and treat it kindly. Wots a guy to do!

The difference is in the way it's kept. In most European countries, they keep kegs (in pubs) in the cellar, which is around 50° F or so. That's well above what Americans consider cold, refrigerator temp is usually around 40°F, so Americans tend to think English and German gents drink "warm" beer. It's not as cold as your fridge, but it's far from actually warm.

OK, so I drink "warm" beer too. I can't stand the swill brewed and called beer in the US, some of the worst crap in the world, shouldn't even be in the same room with a real beer. The rare occasion I do drink a beer, once every couple of months, it'll be an imported dark beer or ale, usually from Germany or Holland. Occasionally English, but those are uncommon in these parts.

What's odd is while American beer is [barely] tolerable at colder temps, German beer is much better at cellar temperature. As mentioned earlier, most stores here keep the coolers as cold as possible (to make American beer drinkable) so I have to let imported beer sit for a while until it's a bit warmer, around 50°, maybe a few degrees higher. So "warm beer" is a relative term, that 10° difference is not much, but does make a big difference in the flavor of a really good beer. Try an Optimator Spaten sometime, or Newcastle Nut Brown Ale, and see if it doesn't taste better as it warms up. Paulaner Salvator is another nice one, and sorry Howlin and Celtic but Guiness is too bitter to me. Good, better than American beer, but too bitter.

Yeah I know I'll get slammed for some of my comments, but if you're really honest about it, American beer really is the worst crap ever called beer. Even most of the lesser quality imported beers are better than anything this country has produced that I know of. Even some of the microbreweries can't match good German beer.

Damn I should have stayed away from this thread, it's been over a month since I had a good beer, (Optimator I think it was), now I want one and won't be able to have it, I have to make a 30 mile drive to find a decent imported beer...nothing around this town at all, at least in singles...

One time at a band rehearsal I challenged the band members to a blind beer taste test. One of the band memers said there was virtually no difference between beers. We were going to test six beers, five known and one mystery beer. Each band member brought his favorite beer and one that he didn't like. As I recall my blind taste test was between Coors, Budweiser, Heineken, Miller, and Pabst Blue Ribbon. The mystery beer turned out to be Piel's (out of business now I believe). I correctly identified every beer but I got Miller mixed up with Piel's. The other band members didn't do as well as myself and they were much bigger beer drinkers than I. You might be surprised at the results if you do a blind taste test. Some of the beers you think are no good actually taste pretty good if you don't know what you're drinking. Some beers that I think are awful (Pabst B R) are actually quite good on tap. Something not good happens in the bottling, storing, preserving and shipping of some beers. We've got a few local beers in Kansas City (Boulevard & Flying Monkey) that are actually quite good.

I have to admit there is one beer I do like here other than Yuengling which is totally awesome.

Old Millwaukee. A lot of people hate it but I like it because it has some zest in it.

Wait for it Chippy, wait......

I used to buy the occasional lambic - the pear was the best.

Yesterday I received a nice "Maiden's Blueberry Ale" from Sherwood Forest Breweries in Marlborough, MA. Very nice blueberry flavour, but not all that beer-like.

ahhhh nothing to get us musicians a'riled like talk of a good ole stout...being of german dutch irish descent (good old american mutt) I have moods for my beers, most of the time I keep my wallet happy though....the worst of the worst is pretty good if you pour it into a glass....Steel Reserve or HG (sister brand much better) if you're ever feelin like slummin it up buy a couple of those cans and pour it in a glass and feel the intoxication set in...I too am not one for guiness but give me a "warm" smitwick's or new castle or one thats super cool and the end of the first one is really good and then the rest of your pack that you left right next to you should be pretty drinkable...but I like the uber cold crap american beer too...soo I guess I don't go to meetings, therefore I'm not an alcoholic cheers!!!
