Hey guys, I just posted a cover of the intro/main riff of Metallica's "The Day That Never Comes" with me playing a completely improvised solo over it.

Criticism welcomed!

Enjoy!

Funny we were just talking bout it elsewhere. That was really cool, bro. The solo is yours, so I can't compare it to anything. It was tight. All you need to do is study your solo pretty well (know it note for note or close enough to leave room for improvs) and then expand it some more.
Definite thumbs up from me :D

Ha, yeah, thanks, man. I will need to relearn parts of it, I think I got most of it in my head. But yeah, it needs some improvements. I actually got frustrated recording the back-tracking to it, my finger started bothering me while I was doing the first measures on the A minor arpeggio.

But yeah, this was a bit of fun. I decided to record it, of course, after talking to you about the new album.

Try another take with the timing of the backing music held loosely in your ears as you solo.
Flow with the timing...

I like what I'm hearing, but I heard a few sour notes in there. Sounds like the song is in the key of A.

I'd recommend hitting a scales site and trying out different modes (Sounds like a phrygian scale would fit really nice into it), perhaps a ionian or aeolian scale would do nicely.

I think you got something good there with the feel, I just think you can do better with your style if you had more guidance on the scale. Good luck!

Yeah, there were sour notes. Especially the B string 12 to 15 switch off notes, ouch.

Hmm, yes, something of a minor scale idea would work. I will test out phyrigian later, but Aeolian may be better, it is dark, but not too dark. Once you start getting into the phyrigian and then onto Locrian it gets a bit too much, especially for that piece. Oh well, I will try it out later.

Thanks guys for the advice and feedback!
