General Music Chat

Hello again! Lol. Yes, I disappeared for quite awhile there, well, a good amount of time anyhow. It has been a long few months.

But as far as music goes, it has never been better! I find I am getting pretty darn good with this guitar, my timing is getting better, I can name the notes faster, and I play much smoother. I think I realized what the problem was:

I started talking to my mother, who played music for a long time and understands it very well. She told me I am too focused on soloing and it does not seem to be where my talent lies right now on guitar. And she said that I am very good at rhythm, I have very strong timing.

So I realized after that discussion that I need to focus on rhythm guitar playing, which is something I have been doing over the past week. I have been learning Metallica's "And Justice For All," which is a bit tricky to get the hang of, but I am doing good at it, almost have it all down (The rhythm guitar that is).

Well, that is my story as far as guitar goes. I have a ton of new songs I am working on, I hope to get the software to record them and post them up here soon for some critiquing.

Alright buddy!! Welcome back! I was just wondering about you. Glad you are still playing and growing. It seems to me that guitarists first get good at rhythm and that soloing comes later. So don't give up on soloing, just save it for a future goal. Looking forward to your posting of new tracks!

And here's where we say...told you so...

was wondering what you were up to not long ago too, glad you dropped in to say hi.

If nobody else did I'm sure I told you long ago to concentrate more on rhythm until you are really good at it, to be a good lead played you have to be a good rhythm player first, so you know where the song is going before it gets there when trying leads.

It's good someone got the point across, now you'll make loads of progress. Don't stop tinkering with leades a bit, nothing wrong with a little praactice now and then on that, just concentrate on rhythm and lead will still be there once you're the best rhythm player in town. And good rhythm players have a lot easier time finding bands than lead players, because most people have their ego trips and want to be in the spotlight. I had trouble putting a band together in the 89's for that reason, finally ended up going 3 piece.

It looks like I might be getting into a band out of state, been kicking things around by phone the past week or so, and it looks like I'll be playing more rhythm than lead, and some sax. Fine with me, I'm as solid as they get on rhythm and I don't care who is in the limelight, I'll still have a few leads and will be doing some sax, a lttle flute, possibly some bass or keys when we swap instrumens and will get to travel around a lot, suits me just fine and I won't be expected to be front man. That's a really good thing, I'm sick of doing 90% of the lead vocals...anyway it suits me just fine, I'd rather be rhythm player in a good band than sitting here watching my equipment gather dust...

I'm glad you're working on rhythm more, that's a good thing. Drop in and day hi more often, let us know you're still alive n kickin. Download Audacity, it does a suitable job for home recordings.

I understand what you guys mean, rhythm is great to work with, and yeah, I should have stuck to it from the beginning. I am going to keep working with it and see where it takes me.

And no, I never could be "lost" from the music world, I am too in love with it. Music is a big part of my life.

Great lead guitarists are way more common than great rhythm guitarists. And there's a bunch of lead guitarists who can't play rhythm to save their lives. If you get to be a top notch rhythm player you'll be in demand. I might be visiting Boynton Beach by the end of the year, I'll let you know. Later...

Andragon, dude, that's great to hear, keep working on those songs, they are not too hard once you get used to them. I have yet to go back and completely look them over, but by now I should be able to handle them with no issues.


GtZip, lmao. Major scales, minor scales, pentatonics, all the great stuff. I only use it once in awhile, taking me time to get used to it.
