Done a lot of gigs both outside and inside. It all depends on the acoustics. We did a gig recently outside surrounded by rock walls thirty feet high. There was plenty of natural sound bouncing back at us and the audience. We didn't have to play loud at all, didn't need any monitors for that matter. Years ago we played a street festival with a row of office building right across the street. Talk about a giant monitor. Then we've played outside on flat farmland with nothing around us. The sound just disappears. Indoors you have all kinds of different acoustics. I don't like playing inside with nothing but hard surfaces around us, floor, walls, and ceilings. It can create havoc with echoes and feedback. One time we did a gig at a bar that was all hardood. It was during the disco era. They had four huge speakers mounted high on the wall (which we were NOT playing through). After the first set I was talking with someone in the audience and they told me you've got to turn down those speakers, they're killing me. The sound was echoing off the walls, ceilings, and floor and bouncing off the speakers. We had to turn WAY DOWN the rest of the night, could hardly hear myself on stage. Basically the more you play the better you'll get at adjusting your sound to different environments. I prefer playing inside in rooms with acoustic ceiling tiles and some carpet on the floor. Maybe the most important factor is how many people show up for your gig. Hopefully you'll have to learn how to adjust your sound in people packed rooms or people packed outdoor gigs. Playing anywhere for nobody is NO FUN. Later...

I like both, as long as I can count on the sound man. I've worked with way too many "unsound men" in my time.

Outside at festivals where you can really crank it is probably my fave, though. (Although in all honesty I don't know if it's the cranking up that I like, or the dancing girls on the lawn in front of me.)

I've done both & I like both (especially the roof over my head when it rains) . . .
And - I like to have plenty of room to move . . .
.
But what's most important to me is the type of people in the crowd, and how much they like the music . . .
. . . 'cause the more they like it - the more I like it . . .
