I think Crip2nite would be the guy with all the useful help. He's really good, and he has a jazz background so I know he has to be well schooled.
Firts mode, "Ionian", is the same as the Major scale.
6th mode, "Aeolian", is the same as the Minor scale.
The first three modes are thought of as major, the last four thought of as minor.
Rather than get into all the "Its the same as the major scale but with a flattened this or a raised that", just think of modes as harmonizations of the major scale.
IMO all ya ever need are the major and minor scales, and major and minor pentatonic scales.
If a chord progression is giving you problems, just solo over each chord as it comes. Target notes that fit with the chord.
