Okay, as I typerate this, they're playing the lounge lizard version of "Say You Will," unplugged, with an acoustic guitar & keys.

The guitarist looks like a low-budget Larry Fine...LOL...I know I'm being unkind, but I always hated that band. (For you youngsters, Larry was the guy in the 3 Stooges with the funny hair & bald on top.)

They're doing stuff for AARP, according to the new singer they have, & then of course there's an upcoming air guitar contest they're promoting that they are oh so excited about.

It's such a shame to see the old pro rockers reduced to this kind of thing.

Their vocals were perfect, & that's saying something for a performance before 10 AM. All in all, it was a good version of the song, I suppose, but it just seemed so frikken sad. At least they're still touring. They just finished travelling with Brian Adams.

Hey Philby,

Ive always like Foreigners heavier side and lead vocals (LOU BABY)...Hot blooded and long long way from home and jukebox hero are the only ones Ive ever covered..Hey, its all about re-inventing yourself and doing what it takes to change with the times.Hell, Im doing it, I dont like it, but it is what it is....I saw Styx a while back on the show..Just like around here local, when I see the gen before me still rockin, it gives me the incentive to not quit and to keep on keepin on the same as I did in 76.
Im not really gettin what your sad about though (not knockin it , just tryin to understand?)..Im sad that I cant make a livin playin that material anymore, YEAH ,and sad THEY cant either on the scale they once did but Im starting to accept it (slowly after 12 yrs)and embrace this new computer driven expression of our talents...Yeah , Im happy anytime my past is reminded by seeing these 1 st gen rockers...

I like foreigner, at least the foreigner of the 70's. That power-ballad crap from the 80's I could have lived without. Blue morning was always one of my favs.

It's sad because they're still doing the same old stuff. No one would want to hear anything they've come up with since the '80's.

Elton John did a tour once where he only played all new material, & got booed off the stage at every show until he added in most of his older songs. Ppl don't care what you're doing now. If you got a following way back when, then that's where they want to keep you - back there.

When was the last time you heard about anything new coming from Jethro Tull or Elvis Costello? They're still out there. They're still writing & trying to get their music out here for us. No one cares, man. "Play Aqualung, dude!" is all you're likely to hear at a Tull concert, like it was the only song they know.

Sad! These ppl aren't juke boxes, but they may as well be living breathing recordings of their glory days as far as the American public is concerned. Ppl won't let an act grow the hell up & play new stuff, except for the lucky few, & god help them if they dare to do a show without doing mostly stuff from their hey-days.

yeah philby, but if you look at a band like rush who can crank onto a stage and play anything from their library, be it 70's 80's 90's, or current, they get nothing but standing ovations. They kept it current over the years, but most of all they kept it interesting. Another great example would be Aerosmith. Like their later stuff or not, they nailed it with the next generation.

Bands like Foreigner and the ilk fell back onto their classic albums one too many times, or in foreigner's case, sold out to pop and lost the gamble.

You're right, Kramer. Some bands just didn't grow. But there are plenty who've tried & failed because of their own fan base who simply wouldn't accept the fact that they're trying to keep up, or are producing new material that's just as good or better than what we already have heard.

If a band can't show me anything but the same old same old, I lose interest pretty quickly, but I'm not your average fan, I suppose.

I can accept that music preferences change as time goes by. I can't accept tossing away an old band's new stuff simply because it's been unheard & untried by the public.

A band like STYX or any of the older groups may have put out newer music that we haven't even had the opportunity to get the taste for, & won't ever get it, if it's left in the hands of the public at large & the media. You must seek the nether regions of the web to even learn if they've done something new, & that's usually where it's left.

And I think that's sad, too.

I think we can thank the big labels for that, soon as a band starts losing interest (many from touring too long, trying to make money to pay back the big labels for their contracts), they just toss em aside and look for the next backstreet boys to replace them.

Damn the man!

I went to see Kansas last year, and they opened up with a medley of songs of their "Freaks of Nature" album, circa 1996. I swear I was the only person in the place singing along...I think the band knew it also. That's sad, because (IMO), it is a FREAKIN' brilliant album. The whole show consisted of idiots in the crowd yelling "Carry on wayward son!"

I was embarrassed for everyone involved.

Labels abandoned the idea of signing acts that appealed to an audience, and instead began "creating" their own acts in a mould of something that is already selling-and giving more effort to convincing the consumer that it's what they want. Ah, you all know this spiel...

I miss good old fashion talent.

Joe - I couldn't agree more. That is exactly what I was speaking of when I started this thread.

I haven't heard that album, but I'll look it up. Thanks for the info.

I must be one of those idiots of which you speak. When I hear a band with a rich history I want to hear some of it. To look back is not bad as long as you remain rooted in the now. The last time I saw Stepinwolf play, I was really disappointed, Glad at first to hear some of my old favs, but it never grew. That and I could not even see the band for all the bikers who went right up front when they came on stage, They may as well just played Born to Be Drunk all night long.

If I saw Kansas, I'd really hate to hear the carry on, or dust in the wind. I truly love both of those albums those songs came from, but skip over every song thats been on the radio, so sick of hearing them. I haven't listened to their 1996 album, didn't even know they did one, but I will certainly check it out now.

Scott...that lil comment has me wondering. Is there a reference that I've missed?

You're usually so dead on with a pithy remark that when you post something like that, I'm sure I should get it. All I can do is go "duh."

Fix it. Explain it to me, man. DON'T LEAVE ME HANGIN', HERE!!!
