Some ppl just don't get the concept of "civilization." You can't have "civilized conversation" with them. I've met quite a few in my short 1/2 century+, & it almost always results in me shaking my head or just looking dumbfounded. Rarely have I ever felt the need to defend myself against them, or worry about thier rudeness or "opinions."

Start off a convo with me with a "hey shXthead" & you better know me really well or be prepared to have me walk away laughing at your inability to communicate with others.

We normally do "turn the other cheek" as it were, and yes, venomous words are just bad breath coming out of an ugly face.., but sometimes, just sometimes, we think that a well-placed "head butt" might be just the ticket!

It just so happens that this time, our collective necks are a bit too sore from all the "cheek turning", not just in this instance, but from life in general...

Hey I.T. - Your music is really cool, don't let some 16 year old kid get you down, he's just pissed that he was browsing porn online and found out what his mom really does for a living

If you write a similar email and then mail it to yourself, you will not only get a good laugh, but laugh again at how stupid these types of non-constructive feedbacks really are.

take it easy

Na, the 16 year old was searching for gay porn and found out what his daddy does for a living. what really killed him was that his daddy kept yelling at the other guy "who's your Daddy? who's your Daddy?"

I know your reading these posts, come on show your self, quit hiding.

you cant appeal to everyone in the music world.

Im in a melodic death metal band, so I know how that goes.
We have smooth riffs, fast progressions, face exploding solos, but ppl who dont like harsh, fret-burning music dont like us. Which is fine to me, becuase that means they must not like a talented musician in my head.
(No we dont just burn frets the whole time. Alot of classical influence is in Melodic Death Metal.)

Thing is, if you like what you do then keep doing it.
And piss off to all those hecklers.

Stay metal.

I think we all kind of know that we have to develop thick skins to be in this business. You're right to expect negative reviews, but you're a little off the mark in one respect.

It seems obvious from the fact that you would post to ask this question that you expect negative critiques, but you didn't expect any to be rude.

To be honest with you, that's a bit naive. It's going to happen.

I know you said it was an email, but if it helps, here's what I would have done if the exact same remarks were made right on my own Web site for the world to see:

"Thanks for the feedback! As I have said many times, nobody's music is for everybody. Peace."

And, I would leave it on the site. I don't want anyone thinking that I edit out the negatives. So what if the vast majority of them turn out to be so? Maybe I can learn from them and improve from suggestions. I honestly believe that NO artist can claim that a majority of people in any given population likes what they do. I'm looking for the few that do, like everyone else here.

The ONLY thing I won't allow is abuse and obviously foul language, which I reserve the right to define.

There will always be someone that thinks you suck. Some of them will be crass and rude. Some of them may come across that way without meaning to. They're just being honest.

Hey, I gave your stuff a listen, and your emailer is entitled to his/her opinion.

Too bad for him/her it's such a narrow minded one.

I love it. It reminds me a lot of old Marillion.

Shrug it off. You're going to get more just like it.

S.P.,

Lots of good points made. We certainly didn't mean to sound exasperated over the "negativity" aspect. We're well aware that we will not be "to everyones' taste", and expect to hear from that side of the coin. Our point was that, no matter how "zen" we are, "accepting" a critique, even if the majority of its' content is "scathing", is simply a matter of fact in this business. However, accepting said criticism thoroughly saturated in a litany of insults is quite another.

We simply wanted to "check ourselves" and make sure that we "got it" when it came to the spirit of the letter. If the content in of itself was sent to us a million or more times, we'd accept and respect what was said. Feeling the need to add "insult to injury" is in poor taste, and should not be tolerated by anyone.

Peace,

I.T.
