All I gotta say is Tony Iommi, man. He puts the caps on his fingers and tunes the guitar down so as not to put so much pressure on his fingers. He also lost them in an unfortunate accident but that didn't stop him from writing great tunes.

Another quick thought. I was inspired by another thread to tell you about capos.

You say your hubby can't play barre chords? Try the capo. He can also try cutting sections of them out so that he can use more than one together to get a truly unique sound.

I got the idea from David Wilcox, an incredible player who uses up to 3 at the same time when he's playing. He plays behind some of them, of course, too. Never tried it, myself, but it could be a direction I would go if I had the prob's your hubby does.

Remember that one can't be overwhelmed by alt tunings when getting into this. It's worth a try, perhaps.

Hope this helps, if nothing else has.
